KvH, I think you forget that we here live in a western society that's different from the western society you live in. Here, really nobody noticed the races of the actors. The only people arguing about race here are stupid neo-nazi thugs and jews (always implying I am anti-semite if I say ANYTHING against any jew/israel/ariel sharon...).

See, we really live in different worlds. I DO NOT make this observation, I simply do not see the race. It's like I don't notice eye colour (unless of course it's exceptionally striking, such as Jean Gray's flaming eyes), so I simply cannot think "so, the blue-eyed ones are the bad guys".

BTW, there are a lot of other reasons for the cast of this movie that make sense. The Agents are the establishment, megacorp type guys (in suits, with hands-free phones). Those types in the real world are white males, mostly. It just wouldn't work as well with some unshaved hispano-type guy, or a fat woman.

Besides, you could of course always turn your argument around - why was there not one non-white star trek captain yet, despite the series' internationality and nationless earth? Why are most heroes white? Big conspiracy? I don't think so. It's just because the movies are made in the western world, for the western world, and that the majority of people here are white.

I think this works on a per-individual subconscious level, yes. Every image you see, whether it is part of reality or part of the reality created by a film, has an effect upon how you perceive the world. Deny it if you think society requires this of you, but you are being cowards if you do. The effect is more pronounced upon those who do not think a lot.. it strikes purely at the emotions, and those who are driven by their emotions are most likely to be affected by it, but everyone is affected by it, whether you live in Belgium or Sweden or the Bronx. People who see this movie will see blonde white men in suits with a bit more trepidation than before, while the nonwhite "good guys" will be seen as less cold, more alive. Think about this the next time you are alone with no woman and you see a black guy with a girl. You might just be seeing the effect I am talking about first hand.

I don't understand your last example, honestly. But I agree with you that this stuff works on a sub.conscious level. But the point is, that where I live, most people simply do not notice the race (except a few political correctness freaks, neo-nazis and jews). And that your point of view is flawed. There is no tendency for the good guys to be non-white, and the bad guys to be white. In fact, the only tendency I can see is that germans are the dumb muscular type

I'd just like to say that in Star Trek IV, there was a middle eastern man as the capatain of the Yorktown, and a black woman as the captain of the Saratoga. Benjamin Sisko in DS9 was black, he captained the Defiant and ran DS9 itself.
