Actually, hearing music you like in another language can inspire you to learn some of that language.. I remember downloading that Tatu video (yeah, the masturbation one ) and really liking the music, so I searched for the lyrics so I could figure out what they were saying. How did we ever cope without the internet? Looking something like that up way back in the stone-age 80s would have taken so much time as to be prohibitive.

I thought it was meant to be stuff others MURCers had not heard of
        My bad
The Welsh support two teams when it comes to rugby. Wales of course, and anyone else playing England

Topha: Sportfreunde Stiller is just a poor copy of Tocotronic...

You might want to check out "Die Sterne", too.

              I certainly don't mean 5 Sterne Deluxe

Tocotronic and Die Sterne are the two big "Hamburger Schule" bands - Sportfreunde Stiller came years later, are just a poor copy, and have happy lyrics (blasphemy! ).

Die Fantastischen Vier - Millionen Legionen UNPLUGGED (it's in german, and quite well known here. It's important to listen to the unplugged version!)
Think I heard of them, aren't these the guys with "12 kleine jegermeister" ?

                  (hope I spelt that right)

No, that's "Die Toten Hosen" (= "the dead trousers").

Anyways I don't like rap, neither english nor german.

I'm usually not a big rap or hip hop fan, too, but Millionen Legionen is different.

Die Toten Hosen were a punk rock band, now they're just a pop rock band

In terms of folk music, the Ranz des Vaches is ultra interesting. Its origins are lost in the mists of time and it is sung in an incomprehensible dialect from the region where Gruyère cheese comes from. The melody is haunting, especially when sung solo, al capello, partially accompanied by the Alphorn. I particularly recommend the version sung by the late Bernard Romanens at the 1977 Fête des Vignerons at Vevey. This is a piece of music that brings tears to my eyes, every time I hear it.

This photo is of Romanens at the festival. He was not a professional singer but a simple peasant from the region.

Incidentally, several composers have introduced phrases from the Ranz des Vaches in their works.

Norah Jones - esp. the live stuff from the House of Blues

                          Go her site and you can d/l several of her HOB sets (I highly recommend "I've Got to See You Again");

Now you can make your own "live" album

                          Joe Cockers Millennium....cool hits album
                          Johnny Cash
                          & a bunch more

LORDI, newcomer metal band from Finland, great songs which sound like Alice Cooper, Kiss or Twisted Sister. They play a bit faster and harder, though...

[OFF TOPIC]I'm also a big fan of Bruce Springsteen, I have seen him two weeks ago in Ludwigshafen/Germany[/OFF TOPIC]

                              Interesting Italian artists:

Elisa - an Italian artist with a beautiful voice, singing in English

99 Posse - an Italian band singing in an Italian dialect that it's foreign for us as for the rest of the world (search on Kazaa for "Non c'e' tempo", for example)

Andrea Bocelli - who sing "commercial music" with opera's style voice

Piero Pelu - nice rock music

                              More to come...
Sat on a pile of deads, I enjoy my oysters.

Alright, seriously.. it seems most MURCers might not know much about classical music, so I will list something which is truly one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, but which is pretty obscure to a lot of people; the Missa Solemnis by Beethoven. I just saw it performed today on TV, and own 3 or 4 different recordings of it, but the best is still Otto Klemperer's rendition. Completed two years before his Ninth Symphony, this is a huge, haunting, powerful work. You will feel your life fuller for having heard it.
