  • St. Anger

Okay, I finally heard Metallica's new single, St. Anger. I have very mixed feelings about it, being a long time Metallica fan.

The instrumentals are great. I love the more old school music sound to it. Very heavy hitting. The new bassist, forget his name, fits the Metallica image perfectly and plays damn good from what I hear.

The lyrics are typical Metallica, and I enjoy them.

THe problem comes in with James' singing. It lacks the same edge as the music. It's too "neo-metal". There are points where it is awesome, points where it's okay and at points I want to slap Hetfield upside the head.

Makes me wonder about the rest of the album. Doesn't it come out this week. Today?

    Anyone else care to comment?

Comes out June 5th. It has leaked this morning on all the IRC channels. Of course, I am probably biased to ask about Metallica in general so I'll refrain I think its safe to say you know whta my vote is.
Honestly though, I absolutely love the song St Anger. It has so much power, depth and feeling, it makes me very happy. It is more than one I expected from Metallica. I think all the fans that started liking Metallica on the Black Album will not like this album too much. I have heard about 5 songs now and they are simply amazing. You will find that other songs are more "radio friendly" and you will ask yourself why they used St Anger as a single. I think it's a statement of "**** YOU" to the rest of the world Wait until you hear Invisible Kid or All Within My Hands. I think the mainstream will like My World. It's more catchy and crunchy but not too heavy or fast.

        I've heard St. Anger once.

        Once.

I'm downloading it to listen to it again and see if it's as piss-poor as I think it is.

        It's disjointed and noisy.

Metallica have long asserted that one of the reasons that they sound different than they used to (there was a BIG change from "And Justice For All" to the black album) is that... they grew up and learned how to play, and James learned how to sing.

St. Anger does nothing but show that they've forgotten how to do both.

Some of the instrumentals have, as Jammrock said, moments of brilliance. The bass player (formerly Ozzy's bassist and the bassist from Black Label Society) is quite good... but it doesn't matter how good the players are if the music sucks.

Edit: CURSES on idiots who purposely mislabel songs on Kazaa! What does it gain them? Nothing!

It's not Black Label Society, it is Suicidal Tendancies.

BTW, for some facts. This album was recorded once. There was no going back and cleaning anything up. It is very raw so to speak. it was never meant to sound perfect like The Black Album.

edit: I should mention that as of yesterday, every single song on Kazaa for St Anger is fake. I think real ones started showing up on Kazaa today with 'ucs' or 'ucx' in the title to differentiate itself from the fakes.

Actually, although he was ORIGINALLY from Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy's bassist (now in Metallica) was doing double duty with Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde's band).

Yeah, Ozzfest last year wasn't half-bad.

Well, unless you count all the opening bands on the second stage.

                    And Adema.

                    And Drowning Pool.

                    And System of a Down.

                    *sigh*

Ok, I paid $60 to go see Ozzy, Black Label Society, and Rob Zombie.

POD was sort of an added bonus.

Ok, just listened to St. Anger again. I reiterate that the drums are off-time and Hetfield's vocals can't seem to stay on top of the melody. He warbles up, down, out, and around it, but never quite hits it on the head.

The "concept" of the song is great. I love the idea of Metallica merging the musicianship of their newer albums with the raw power and intensity of their older albums.

The actual implementation, though, left MUCH to be desired.

I absolutely and 100% agree with what Gurm said in his first post (including the only heard it once part, but especially the "they learned to play" part).

Metallica are a better country band than Metal, I'm afraid - but they make the best country I know

Hmm.... I just listend to Invisible Kid and St. Anger, Invisible Kid had a decent instrumental line, but James sounded like crap. As for the title track, lets just say I'm less than awe-stricken.
Going to listen to a few more of the tracks at some point, but my impression so far is that the album leaves something to be desired.
Just my opinion, and as a pretty big fan I was looking forward to this album quite a bit. :/
