Apparently, the median cost for a home in the SF Bay Area (which is large and diverse, although we pretend to be a small market when bitching about George Steinbrenner) was $463,900. Just to put that in perspective, the median cost for the entire state is just under $200,000.
Santa Clara County, where Helevitia found the proverbial $269,000 shoe box, has a median price of over twice the national average. Oakland (think Newark, NJ with Jerry Brown as mayor) also has a median price of more than twice the national average.
Median Home Price In San Francisco: $516,400 (4th Quarter, 2002)
Median Home Price in Cedar Falls Iowa: $81,500 (4th Quarter, 2002)
National Median Home Price: $148,000 (4th Quarter, 2002)
According to rentalguide.com, the average San Francisco Rent is $1,657 per month, and that's a drop from last year. In 2000, rents in San Franciso increased by over 26%, which is flat-out nuts. The national average was between 4 and 6%. Nearly 25% of SF renters spend over half their incomes on rent.
My source for the median home prices was the National Association of Realtors.
Cedar Falls is looking better all the time. If Arnold becomes governor, I'm moving!
