  • How careless were you at 22?

    Looking back at some old pictures I was pretty damned careless in 1972.....at least during this trip to Texas;

    Scene: the Tower of the Americas - San Antonio Texas. 750' (228.6m) to the top of its antenna and ~622' (189.6m) to the roof;

    San Antonio from the 550' (167.64m ) observation deck;

    We weren't satisfied with that generic cityscape, so we got this perspecive of HemisFair Plaza by hanging over the edge of the 622' (189.6m) roof;

    Myself, Dennis H. and Mike H. (brothers and my best friends since middle school) found our way to the roof then proceeded to take turns hanging onto the ankles of the third as he dangled over the edge shooting pictures. My mother almost fainted when she saw mine, but I got the impression my dad wished he had been there to join in the fun

    I'm sure security is better now

    Oh well.
    You lived to tell the tale.

    I remember climbing onto all the tall habour-cranes. From the outside.

      I find it sort of sad that you were 22... 3 years before I was born.

          Wasn't very careless at 22. I'd already done about all that kind of stuff I could do by the time I was 20. Probably good that I got it all out my system (mostly) before becoming a family man.

          I think about the most careless thing I did at 22 was follow a tornado around.

            Didn't have to go looking for 'em here in SE Michigan....they come knockin' all by themselves, esp. in farm country where I grew up

              Now that's just stupid. Apparently you had no fear of heights.. never EVER would I hang over the edge of some slanty roof 62 stories in the air... NEVER!

              btw, I went up in that thing when it was brand new.. during Hemisfair in 1968.. I was 6. My aunt even made me a Tower of Americas birthday cake (my dad made the pillar part with those three little pools painted at the bottom.. the cake was the top part.)

                Well, I don't think I'm very careless right now. At least, I don't think so.

                The most dangerous thing I've done so far since reaching 22 was putting together some smp rigs without any anti static protection.

                  King O' carelessness over here.

                  Hmm, when I was 22 eh? That was back in 2001. I had a psycho girlfriend with a hyper active kid, had a "player" type girlfriend for a while, she was pretty hot and we loved each other a the time, twas a short lived romance. Also I crashed my Saturn doing 160 in a recommended 40 zone (long story).

                  (Exception: I also remember sleeping a with a few other girls, nothing serious just sex.)

                  I think I was pretty careless back then, smartened up though , and I finally discovered what I truly want to be in life, an automotive engineer, I've calmed down from racing and decided I want to invent and design. I guess things just happen fast in my life.

                  AND I'm moving out of this hell hole whom has grabbed my soul and reduced it to nothing but a glimmer of faith that I still hold on to believing that where I'm moving to is going to free me of this mysery. I once fell into a deep depression and the only thing I kept holding on to was where I'm going back to. So all in all it's getting better.

                  Coincidentally, I moved right the moment I stopped going to MURC. Only difference now is I have money and access to more money through my current skills therfore allowing me to acquire a proper ISP connection therefore voiding a dis-continuation of my membership here at this fine Forum to whom I've donated very happily to. *phew* (it's not about the fourm it's about the friends you've made here)

                    At 22, I was inspecting airframes in the Air Force. I wasn't allowed to be careless

                      No, I don't have a fear of heights. No problem there. When I was a kid you could often find me at the top of a cottonwood tree...and they can grow up to about 180 feet.

                      That goes along with the skydiving I also got involved with and why, when given the opportunity, I did a few HALO (high altitude low open) jumps: initially going out at 24,000 and later 30,000 feet and opening at <2000 ft. 'twas cool, but once tried that was enough.

                        Funnily enough.. I don't think skydiving would worry me nearly as much.. the parachute takes away the horrible certainty of a very messy death.

                            Back home we had water spouts (kinda hard to chase after them) and hurricanes, but I've always been faacinated by weather. So when I moved out here (Oklahoma) my "obsession" lead to some interesting tornado chasing (they come knocking down here too).

                              Second chance gut packs were required when I jumped. Strangely, skydiving is no where near as scary as bungy jumping to me - I think it's the whole "what if the chords are just a few feet to long" thing. Every time I go I have a fear of hearing the riggers say "uh oh" as I'm about 10ft from the ground.

                              I've always been careless for the sake of a good photo op, but that's usually in more of a garaunteed broken bones situation than a garaunteed death situation.

                              One of the most careless (read: stupid) thing I remember doing was getting bored repelling off of a cliff with some friends (I'd guess between 150 - 200 feet) and deciding to go harness free. It was fun the first time until I decided to take the whole drop in two hops my second time - gee who'da thunk a nylon rope would slice through leather gloves and the back and arm of a leather jacket like a hot knife through butter
                              Yes I drive a 13yr old Volkswagen; Yes I'm a dirt poor college student; Yes every tank of gas is more $$ than the value of my car, but it is FUN to drive, so I don't care about your ego or how much your car cost, if you insist on going the exact same speed in the passing lane as the car next to you for 10 minutes, stop being a self righteous ass, move the hell over and just let me by!!!
