There's NO WAY you could cut a hole in the wall o a german house! And nobody's going to have one window permanently open with some ugly cardboard or something covering the part that's not covered by the air con.. some houses (those for only 1 family to live in) do have proper aircon installed, but not many.

The home aircon units you can buy here take just ordinary 230V.

I think airco units aren't common in living houses of most central/western european countries, because the climate doesn't make it worthwhile.

There sometimes are very hot days in the summer, but only a relatively small amount over the whole year. That, and most houses in central and western europe are build with bricks or concrete, so they isolate better than wooden houses.

Split aircons are easy to install (1 - 2 hours). The refrigerator unit is mounted outside on two angle brackets. The part inside, which is just a heat exchanger and a fan, screws straight on the wall. A 5 cm hole, behind the inside unit, from outside to inside carries 2 insulated copper pipes and one power lead, is packed with foam chips and plastered over, inside and out. The 2 units can be up to 5 m apart, so there is choice of positioning. The price of a small unit here is about CYP 280 and is OK for a room up to ~50 - 60 m3, rising to the double for a unit 3 x more powerful. (1 CYP = ~USD 1.70), VAT and installation included. Added benefit: ~ instant heat in winter at economical rates for boosting. They plug straight into a 230 V wall outlet.

Temp just now 37°C and still rising but, unfortunately, RH has risen to ~35%, so comfort level is beginning to become lower. I'm thinking of switching on the aircon in my office (3 computers running) but I'll wait until after lunch, which will be ready in 15 minutes.

It's been >30c here since Feb. AC is an absolute must (running day&night) if not to reduce temps, to lower humidity. Heck even the Gulf (of Mexico) water temp is 32c (90f)

Good to have thick brick walls and window on the west side with trees etc. in front of it
And the Sun is starting to be low enough that I might actually consider going outside...(sunburns, check previous posts here and you'll know why)

Cooler today but not by much. Tomorrow they reckon could be the day that records are broken. Rumours also that it will be even hotter next week.

the typical brick/concrete used in most construction absolutely blows chucks when it comes to insulating against IR

What annoys me they won't do simple things.

                          1) Re-route the electrical power so we can open windows. Yes we can only partly open the windows. This was pointed out when they were wiring the place but to re-route it around the windows cost to much.

                          2) Put vents in the windows.

                          3) Paint the building white to reflect the heat rather than absorb it.

It's getting hotter by the day. 36C today, 40C expected tomorrow.

Very comfortable at work without airco 31C inside. We just moved to a new building the old one had airco this one hasn't (altough one is planned for next year).

Fully airconned in work so that was fine. Tube has speed restrictions on tonight though because of the heat - delays all over the place... ...whilst being swealteringly hot in the carraiges as usual.
