Republicans aren't all far right zelots just as Democrats aren't all left wing loonies. It only seems that way because the extremes always make the most noise.
The real difference is that Democrats act liked a 5th grade classroom full of ADD'ers while Republicans act more like grad-school students
Sexually dysfunctional? Boy, did you get that wrong
As for "mean spirited", I take it you haven't been listening to the Democrats call even liberal Republicans "baby killers" or throw "they want to throw old people out of the retirement home" during every election since the Republicans took the House in '92.
Loud is a necessity when dealing with the BS noted above.

As far as liberal Republicans go, I have fond memories of Jacob Javits and Lowell Weiker. I can't recall either being called a "baby killer" except maybe by the anti-abortion crowd, and most of them are not on the left.
I can't think of a single, bonafied liberal Republican in the Senate today. There are some moderates, but I can't think of a single liberal. Not one.
When Bob Dole ran against Richard Nixon in the Republican Primary, he was considered very conservative. Dole is now considered a moderate. The GOP has moved very far to the right -- almost to the point where "Republican" and "liberal" are oxymoronic. I'm sure they exist on the local level, but unfortunately, the liberal Republican is a thing of the past as far as national politics go.

As for the GOP moving to the right; so has the rest of the country. That's why the Democrats are not only not in control of Congress & the Presidency but also out of power in most Governorships and State houses.
Only in Califlaky, New York City and a few other liberal bastions do you see strong support for them. Even in the environs around Detroit we're seeing previously heavily Democratic districts going GOP.
"Liberal" is indeed a dirty word in my neighborhood, and this neighborhood is very diverse in all respects. I saw a poll the other day that said the number of men identifying with the Democratic party is dropping like a rock;
When Clinton was re-elected in '96 about 60% of men identified themselves as Democrats.
By the time Bush was elected in '90 this had dropped to about 45%.
Now it's at 30% or so.
There is a similar, but not as dramatic, move among married and older women, presumably because they've had enough life experience to know better.

And they are doing a great job.
I think things are going swimmingly.
And they will just keep getting better.
I't's amazing what a difference it has made.
I knew things would be different with the
advent of Conservative Republican Rule,
but I had no idea how different.
Film critics struggle to review "The End of Days" and still retain their indie cred. Plus: The AIDS crisis in Africa and one writer's desperate attempt to get a job at Maxim.
Arnold was also a big (ab)user of anabolic steroids, and he was a dealer as well. Just ask his friends back from the time at Gold Gym where they got their stuff from. He even admitted the first (not that it takes a genius to figure out).
If anything it will probably even give him more votes among the averag joe.
