Not sure if it is your cup of tea but the Black Company books by Glen Cook are about as good it gets IMHO. The word used to describe his work the most is "gritty". Lots of grey and black without much white. The first three books are classics after that it is more inconsistent but occasionally great as well. Everything else I have read by him has been good as well.

Stephen Brust is great, also a bit dark. The main character of the Vlad Taltos series (yes, that would be Vlad) is an assasian. If you like The Three Muskateers type of writing the Khaavren Romances (The Phoenix Guards, etc.) are great fun. I did not like the recently rereleased To Reign in Hell much. Everything else has been great.

Another vote for Eddings here.. have read the Begariad/Malloreon series twice they were so much fun. The Magician series is more than a trilogy, by the way. I think there are at least six books in that series, with another tangential series from that world as well. Yes, all of Feist's books are pretty good, at least all I've read. Try Faerie Tale if you want something interestingly different that's still fantasy. There are some old basics you need to read if you are into fantasy. Try Three Hearts and Three Lions by Poul Anderson. There are one or two others but that's the only one that comes to mind. He wrote that in the 50s and it was one of the first of the new fantasy genre. Tolkien invented the genre, of course, but he wasn't really trying to start one. That's one reason why his works will always be the best.

I would strongly recommend Steven Erikson's book series 'A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen'
The world is wonderful, with lots of different factions and characters with different goal whose paths often intertwine. Steven is a pretty descriptive writer and has thrown some good plot twists in as well.
One of the best things about the books is that he is not afraid to kill off characters, even if you've been following them closely for over a book or two. The books may require some thought to remember who that did what and where, but it's fun to read a book where you can see some connections about characters a while before he mentions them.

He has currently finished four books, and more are in the process of getting written.
The titles of the first four books:
        1. Gardens of the Moon
        2. Deadhouse Gates
        3. Memories of Ice
        4. House of Chains

Hey, we were PISSED because the second trilogy set in Tencendor (the Wayfarer Redemption) isn't available in the USA until 2005, but it's already out in UK and Australia. So we had someone bring it over from Ireland.

Almost done now, if I could pry the third book away from Julie long enough to finish it.
