Not sure if it is your cup of tea but the Black Company books by Glen Cook are about as good it gets IMHO. The word used to describe his work the most is "gritty". Lots of grey and black without much white. The first three books are classics after that it is more inconsistent but occasionally great as well. Everything else I have read by him has been good as well.
Stephen Brust is great, also a bit dark. The main character of the Vlad Taltos series (yes, that would be Vlad) is an assasian. If you like The Three Muskateers type of writing the Khaavren Romances (The Phoenix Guards, etc.) are great fun. I did not like the recently rereleased To Reign in Hell much. Everything else has been great.
