I actually agree with you KvH. That's also the reason the third reich could happen.

You might want to start with a film first: Leni Riefenstahl's "documentary" (and I use the term loosely), "Triumph of the Will."

Hitler's speeches went on for hours, and Riefenstahl did considerable editing in "Triumph of the Will". If you really want to read his speeches, they have been published in a large, expensive series called, "Hitler: Speeches and Proclamations 1932-1945: The Chronicle of a Dictatorship." This is a multi-volume series, and the individual books are expensive. A journalist, Max Domarus, recorded all of Hitler's speeches, word for word. Two of the four volumes have been translated into English.

The masses consist of people. Most people aren't dumb, yet masses are. That's because when you put a single individual in a mass, he feels an urge to do as the others do, even if that is the exact opposite of what he/she would normally do.

It could even be that most of the people in a mass think that what they're doing is wrong. But their tendency to "look and see" and the fear of what will happen to them if they act differently from other people prohibits them from saying it out loud. For a change to happen, it would only take a moment when all the people who think otherwise would act simultaneously. But because they do not know the exact moment when to act, and many of them don't even know that they're in fact the majority, they don't dare to do it.

When this goes on long enough, people kind of get used to the system. Because they can't tell other people's real opinions anymore, they'll just play it safe and act like they're supposed to. Giving a warning example of what will happen to them if they think otherwise will help to keep them down, because people will think "hey, at least my things are not as bad as they could be". Creating a "common enemy" will also help, because then people will of course stick together. If you succeed in doing all of this long enough for the generation to change, there's no stopping you.

Hitler was a cruel, twisted person... But he sure knew how to manipulate people.

Yeah, lets delete all references to the past from our collective memories! Anyone else find the book 1984 to be a happy, uplifting story?

We must remember not only man's greatest triumphs, but also his greatest falls, lest we fall again.

The problem is, he is the ONLY bad guy who apparently has ever existed, according to the media. The sins of Stalin or the British Empire are nonexistent because they are neglected in history. Stalin killed more people much more brutally than Hitler, and the Brits certainly had no business talking about "Prussian militaristic arrogance" (The pot calling the kettle black, except the Brits used theirs worldwide.)

Do Russians get a guilt trip heaped on them? NO.. to them Stalin is still a hero! Do the British get a guilt trip because they used and abused the rest of the world to enrich themselves, with many colonial wars in the process? No, they don't. So why are the Germans plagued with the onus of being somehow inherently evil? It's not just the abundance of Jewish media moguls seeking revenge for the holocaust, either.. The problem is that the victors write history to suit themselves, and their own sins are, in their minds, expurgated by victory itself.

Now that many of the old colonials are dead or are moribund, I believe that many Brits are taking a more ethical stance against the old colonial policies of divide and rule, ship the riches home and to hell with the "wogs and niggers" (no offence intended but this attitude and wording was pc when I was young). As a Brit living in an ex-Brit colony, I see my fellow-Brits resident here as falling into two categories: those of the ex-colonial school, along with the ignorant slobs (often ex-ME-oil rig workers) who still treat the Cypriots like dirt (and call them Cyps to their faces) and the more enlightened species who realise they are visitors in a land that is not their's and aim to discreetly fit in with their hosts. The proportions between the two camps vary from perhaps 3:1 in the Paphos area to about 1:5 in this region. I'm frequently very ashamed of the behaviour of some of my fellow-Brits in this country.

In the UK, of course, the situation is different. I think it goes without saying that most of the intelligentsia fully realise the crimes we have committed in the past, but that the ignorant masses haven't a clue, anyway.

However, I very much doubt whether many countries have never committed crimes against humanity, so it may be unfair to single out the Brits. **ALL** the colonial powers have done this, since Alexander the Great and probably before him. Even your USA is not without sin, even today ( http://web.amnesty.org/web/web.nsf/3...56d3a0046b177/$FILE/united%20states%20of%20america.pdf ). And these crimes also have their history written to suit themselves.

Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.

Right on Kv. The masses want to be dumb and have someone tell them what to do, take no responsibility and blame everything on somebody else. If the state of the world is the product of the masses, which it must be, then intelligence, sensitivity and maturity are leaves in the wind. Sick.
How can you possibly take anything seriously?

Most, if not all, countries have their dirty little secrets in their past. For example, as nice as we canadians seem to be, there's that nasty business of taking all the land away from the natives all those years ago. There was some genocide going on during that transaction I'd bet...

Yeah, Hitler was evil, can't argue that. He certainly didn't have a monopoly on that trait though.

There was a great line in, of all movies, men in black. Tommy Lee Jones said
A person is smart; people are dumb panicky dangerous animals and you know it.
Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox

Well, I'd have to question the validity of applying the "a single person is smart" too generously.
