I'm not a laywer, but have taken several law classes. This helps procedurally but you need more than that.
It also helps to have the skills of a trained observer which comes with the turf when you've worked in the medical field, though you would think most cops would have this skill as well. In my experience not that many cops actually do, though they think the do
I'm also blessed to have had some real morons as opponents. Many of the cops I've seen couldn't find or reason their way out of a paper bag much less do a decent investigation. It's also hard to use the scientific method when you're poorly trained in the sciences to start with.
Much of the stuff they use in court (skidmark evidence for example) is from texts and field guides that have not had the benefit of peer review. In fact many of the texts on various forms of physical evidence (such as those skidmarks) conflict with each other. As such you often see cookie-cutter "evidence" that may or (more likely) may not apply to the specific situation at hand.

it helps to measure both the inside and outside track dimensions. Average them and you have the approximate axle track dimension of the vehicle as long as it doesn't have offset or reversed rims.

Now what was that town where they had a MAXIMUM IQ to be qualified to be a cop? I think if your IQ was over 130 you were disqualified. It's amazing how people abuse power in this country and get away with it. This rule was probably set up to protect the job of a moron police chief who didn't want any competition for his job.
Yes well, the cops in my area are generally good. Curteous, willing to help, not overbearing power hungry bastards, etc. I pretty much ran a red once (I looked down a milisecond before the yellow came on, and thought I had enough time to make the light) and got pulled over. He gave me a ticket for expired tags, a non-moving violation, so my insurance wouldn't go up.
The good news was that I had actually paid for my tags on time via mail, but they tags got lost in transit to me. So it got my lost tags replaced with a reciept signifying that the tags were paid for on time and got all the charges dropped.

Had the opposite experience once: I stopped at a stop sign because I knew this cop car was behind me and he rear-ended my car. I got out of my car and asked the driver how he managed to stop when my car wasn't there: not clever!!!!
