    What I have never understood is that the device is supposed to land ± flat on the surface, so that the transmissions are sent out normal to the surface. What if a small rock tilts it?

      The single gets broadcast in the wrong direction which was one of the problems mentioned on the BBC article. Looks like it's a gonna though.

            Two of those were the Viking Landers in 1976, back when NASA was still worth a damn. If you are going to do something, you might as well do it right.

                    If they had the funding. Don't forget that Viking was a billion dollar project. They never get that kind of money these days.
