English doesn't borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them over, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.

It seems like there is no lightheartedness AT ALL on the MURC over the past few months. NONE. This is what bugs me. I can understand that commercial not being a persons cup of tea, but to say that the people who laugh at it are sadists is a bit much. The people laughing at it realize that its not a real animal. I laughed at it (well, to be honest, I didn't find it gut-bustingly knee-slappingly funny), but I did chuckle, and I'm no sadist. I have more respect for animals than I do for people. I can certainly see how some people found it to be in bad taste. Thats understandable.

I just think this entire MURC group needs to chill out a little. All the political posting on here has turned people who used to be friendly into people who are really adversarial (sp?). I'm betting the bickering that you see in other threads is fallout from the heated political threads. Thats a shame. You used to be my favorite group of people that I've never met.

Sorry for the thread-jacking Liz. I'll get off the soapbox now.

i viewed this as i view video games.

when you play them and lets say something like this happens, do you stop the video game and have a debate about it?

i just thought it was funny, because i remember all the times ive washed my car then to come to it the next day and see cat footprints all over it.

cats dont belong on cars, but they always find theirselves up there.

                Hey
I thaught It was funny - and I have a cat.

here is something really funny though.

My eldest daughter has just discovered what a joke is (she is 3 and a bit).

'its something silly that makes you laugh, daddy!' she says.

I said 'tell me a joke, then'

she says - 'they playroom tidying its self!, hahhhahahhahaha (laughs uncontrollably), or, or, a spider with only 2 legs! hahahahhahahahahaha.....'
I said 'that isnt very funny' (trying to get to the punchline)
'it is when I think of them!' says she......

She obviously hasnt quite got the hang of them yet!

                another funny thing she said.

she was playing with her school bag on Friday....

she turns to me and says -
'my bag is a bit empty to day - I dont have any MASTERPIECES in it!'
                I nearly wet myself!

                RedRed
Dont just swallow the blue pill.

I cant see why anything made funny can be wrong.
heck, I always loved the monthy python sketches, even those that involved the guillotine, random acts of senseless violence, stoning of women etc.

Its all a matter of context.

Of course, Context is an adult word - you need to SEE it, to uhm, see it.

So yes, beheading a cat, throwing a carthief off the bridge, eletrocuting the electrician, just because he's 4 weeks late - it can all be good fun- if in the right context.

And yeah. Lighten up. It might be raining cats and dogs outside, but Im waterproof and still smiling.

There is bad humor. Sometimes a joke can creat or enhance a stereotype.

Examples for funny yet problematic jokes:

Q: Why black people's hands (palms) and feet are white ?
A: Because when God dyed them, they were still walking on four.

In South-Africa, a few officials observed a Black man water skiing while a white man was driving the boat.
They called the man and commented on how unappropriate it is for a white man to drive the boat while a black man enjoys water skiing.
The (white) man replied:" Guys, I don't mess with how you run this country, now do I ? So do me a favour and don't mess with how I hunt crocodiles."

What would some people learn from these jokes ? That blacks are more like animals than human beings and that blacks are expendable.

That is not humor, or a joke, funny or otherwise. That is classic Temp Forum material (You all know why).

Now the cat in the ad, I can see humor in that. Shocking, but somewhat amusing.

Besides, many people find those two jokes hilarious. Some of which are quite against the cat joke. Why ? Because unlike a (black) person, a cat can't talk/fight to defend him/itself.

Oh well. I found both to be quite good jokes - although i knew them (or some variations off them).

I might consider pulling a person after my boat, just for hunting crocodiles. Not that I like crocodiles, but I do know a few people I would like to use for baith.

The jokes are fun if they can be told both ways.
What about asking the black man: Hey? you not worried about the crocodilles? - No, more aboout the drift mines.....

Most racist/disciminating jokes simply arent funny.
But those that are, gives me no moral quarrels to laugh about!

The best discriminating joke I ever heard (sadly it doesnt translate well - it involves weelchairs and hookers) was about people with muscle decay disease. That was a real thigh thumper.

Oh. That joke was told by the danish president of the muscle decay society.
