  • Crappy way to die

I was out in my backyard this afternoon when I noticed this dead rat stuck in my plum tree. Upon further investigation, I realized that he had jumped from the roof and got wedged in between two branches. What a way to go

Could it have been a predator of sorts jamming it in there for eating?.. seems like an awfull long jump for a rat

maybe he jumped on the branch first and as he was moving along, got stuck? It was the only reasoning I could come up with. What predator could be out on that limb without falling or breaking the branch?

Maybe he was sick and dying and he fell from the branch above?

I am thinking that maybe a predatory bird of sorts could have dropped it while flying above, or maybe a cat climping in the higher branches..did you perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death?

Weird place for a rat to end up dead

Looks to me like cat behaviour. Many cats "park" their prey out of the reach of other predators, when they kill more than they can eat at the time. Leopards are notorious for this, as they often kill gazelles which are enough for 2-3 days' meals, then drag the cadavers into a tree and jam them there in the thinnest branches they can reach. That way, the hyenas cannot pinch their food. Mountain lions do the same, though more often on inaccessible rock faces, rather than trees.

I don't see any bites taken out of the rat. Plus, cats never venture into our backyard.
