Technically, Iceland was part of the EU - it left again though. I know that it had connections to Denmark, but it isnt even on the same coninental plate as europe!

Morocco had its application turned down - which was a really bad idea, IMHO - If Turkey and Bellarous can belong to europe - why not morocco? its closer to the 'centre' of europe that Turkey - or Ireland or the UK for that matter!....

I could see Canada as a part of the EU within 20-25 years.

As for the US, things would have to really change....

I don't see Canada as a part of EU...

First off, I think Canadians will disagree with the idea that we are Europeans... lol...

RedRed, you again baffle me. Morroco more European than Belarus? You honestly have no clue, do you? If the EU starts accepting countries that are not at all a part of Europe and have no European culture and even few European descendents, what's the point of calling it the EU? Actually, I think they should not call it the EU at all.. more like the PCU.

Yes, this is incorrect. There are several states with under 1 million population. The Lander of Germany are roughly equivalent to average US states in population. In area, Texas alone is the size of France, but with a population of under 30 million.

In fact it's a mistake, in this page http://erc.unesco.org/cp/MSList.asp?lg=E&&type=1&®=1 UNESCO write "Europe" but on the same page, in the bottom left, it's write "Europe and North America". USA member of UE is an intersting idea :-) but it's now a problem to know if Turkey is or isn't in Europe so USA :-D

                    Bienvenue, Julio,

It's quite clear whether Turkey is in Europe, or not. The small part west of the Bosporus/Sea of Marmara/Dardanelles, including Istanbul, known as Trakya, is in Europe. All the rest (by far, most of it) is in Asia. This part, known as Asia Minor and Anatolia in English, or Anadolu more correctly, probably comprises over 95% of the 779,452 km2. Turkey is bigger than any European country, bar none, and is also bigger than Texas and has twice the population of Texas, most of whom are nominally Muslim.

When I flew from Istanbul to Izmir, it was announced as a transcontinental flight by the pilot!

That's still not an answer though, Brian: The territorial majority is in Asia, but the polotocally and economically important part lies in europe. That said, I don't think their mindset is european enough. I welcome the eastern european countries, though

Is Russia in europe? Isn't it "behind" Ural? (I suck at geographics)

That part of Russia that is in Europe is itself much larger in area and population than Turkey. And the Russian mindset is certainly European.

You should really get out your maps, Az..

KvH, I'm impressed...many americans don't know much about anything outside the US. Well it seems I was wrong...hehe!

Az he's right, the land beyond Ural is Siberia, which is part of Asia, but the hart of Russia itself lies in Europe, on this side of the Ural. And that part is helluva lot bigger than Turkey!

Sorry, I meant to say European Union country

Of course, Russia is ginormous, as big as the USA and China together, with about 30% of it in Europe and 70% in Asia.

I can't agree about the mindset, though. Whereas the Muscovite mindset is European, you cannot say the same in the Asian parts of the country, a large part of which is Muslim and Buddhist, not to mention even a Jewish minority republic. Did you know that there are over 70 distinct ethnicities in Russia?
