I dont know what the pseeding regulations are in that town.

It LOOKS like the SUV was going too fast.

Again, this only proves that our rules and regulations about traffic are actually quite good.. Accidents DO happen, but:

1: The Pedestrian was crossing a red light, outside a crossing zone.
2: A car ran a pure red light.
3: Another car was going too fast while crossing a light.

It took 3 violations to make an accident. To protect against this is, in my oppinion, to grossly limit the ability of any and all to travel in the public. It would require we all took the train.

Speed limit at that intersection is 35mph (56kmh)... like virtually all intersections most people (>99%) don't slow down.

Most people don't use crosswalks let alone bother with crossing lights. I don't (read on). Alot of the time it's far more hazardous to cross when the crosswalk light says it's ok because of traffic turning and let me tell you, best get out of their way if they do. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count all the times I've had to step back up on the curb or dodge a turning vehicle beacuse if you don't get plowed over you'll get sideswiped.

btw I know exactly where this intersection is... grew up in that part of the country, did alot of running around Dayton in my teens

my complaint is that the jaywalker wont have even a fine as in this country the pedestrian is always right no matter what............... it is a shame he got numbed like that but had he followed the law (judge dredd voice) he wouldnt have been involved

What's really tough is when you have a big pileup and it's not the fault of ANY of the drivers/pedestrians etc.

In 1978 I was driving home from work in my 1977 Cadillac Eldorado. It was gold in color and fully loaded with a 502 CID (8.22 liter) engine, front wheel drive, 225 inches (5.7 meters) long and weighed about 5500 lbs empty (2494 kg); in other words about the largest US car ever made and a living room with wheels

Anyhow; I approached an intersection and the light was green. There was a double-box semi in the left turn lane and a wooded patch blocking my view of the cross-street to the left so I slowed from 45 mph to about 35 mph before entering the intersection.

Good thing, since the traffic light had malfunctioned and was green in both directions.

Crossing from the left was a 3/4 ton capacity full size Ford van doing 50 mph (the speed limit on that road). Because of the semi and the woods we ended up invisible to each other, which means as soon as we entered the intersection....

          BOOM!!!!

The impact points were my left front corner at about the wheel and his right front corner just about a foot in from the end of his bumper.

          Result:

My 5500 lb vehicle did two complete 360's with my door sprung totally open and me hanging out the opening only held in by my seat belt. If I'd have been ejected my car would likely have run over me twice and I wouldn't be typing this. As it is I only sustained minor cuts, bruises and a wrenched neck that needed a brace for about 2 weeks.

The van, about 6000 lbs in weight, had it's entire right sheetmetal skinned off as if it were a sardine can, but the passenger on that side was also held in and saved by a seat belt, though he suffered a dislocated shoulder.

Both vehicles were totaled and, lucky for both of us, a Sheriffs deputy was an eyewitness. She had gone into a store for a Coke and witnessed the accident from only about 100 feet away.

Her quote was that she had seen both lights since she was on a diagonal, and when both sides went green she just dropped her can & reached for her radio before the impact even happened

Moral: WEAR YOUR FREAKIN' SEAT BELTS!!

          Man.....that was scary.
