The TV series I believe was in 1988 sucked too.

Glad to see its being made, unhappy to see that Cruise is the lead. I have mixed feelings about Spielberg as director. The outcome should prove interesting to say the very least.

No problems with Cruise here, worried about Spielberg. Of course it won't be like Jeff Wayne's musical. Hopefully it'll not be like the third third of A.I. Hopefully they find their own style and don't transpose it into the present or future.

Well to bring this thread back from the dead....I wsa reading my the local paper that they where shooting flim right down the street from where I live at for the movie. Sounds like its going to be a modernzied War of the Worlds set in present time.

My local paper doesnt have the article on line so I can't link to it
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Yep even the right newspaper! I think my condo is 10 minutes down the road from where they did the shooting. I'll have to take a ride down there to check it out

The original 1953 movie was a shade campy, but still OK. (Pacific Tech is probably Caltech, in case no one knows; wouldn't be the first time). It is not nearly as good as 1951's "The Day the Earth Stood Still." I'll probably watch the new WOTW just for the effects, but I don't think much of Cruise or Speilberg, particularly Cruise.

The TV series was pretty lame as I recall. I think it was done because of the modest success of "V".

I don't see the WOTW movie/radio show as anti-capitalist, nor do I recall the book as anti-capitalist (been a long time, though).
For a real anti-capitalist scifi, check out "They Live." Even "The Day the Earth Stood Still" had some slight anti-capitalist undertones, and was definitely anti-war.
