What puzzles me a little is that none of the tombstones exhibits any Christian symbolism, that I can see. In fact, some of them remind me of Chinese tombstones.
I'm not really familiar with the prairie states, but I find it rather difficult to imagine a non-Christian community there. Could the alternative be an orthodox sect that eschews graven images, including crosses? I haven't got a clue about minority sects and their geographical locations.

A lot of US graveyards do not have the cross or religious symbols on them. Cemetaries owned by Masons/Shriners do not even allow tombstones that raise off the ground, just headstones.
