    I think the issue was
there are three words in "the English language"
    Language is the third word.

For your solution to work, the elephant must float.

For his solution to work water by volume would have to weigh the same as an elephant, which it doesn't.

But you're on the right track KRSESQ. Try again. (Brain gave you a good clue by explaining the problem with your solution.)

        (same density)

Only if the elephant sank. If it floated, he is correct.

The solution must work under conditions of any elephant density.

Elephants don't float! You're saying that if the density of the elephant was the same as water then it would float. But that would also make the weight by volume the same so we're arguing the same side of the coin.

Does the elephant have to be alive and whole?

No, I'm not saying that the elephant would float or sink or making any assumption about its density. (yes, I see you were talking about density).

The solution offered is correct under the condition that the elephant must float.

A sunken elephant must displace its weight in water only if it has the same density.

The elephant's density cannot be the same as water, it must either float or sink, but you cannot assume you know what it will do. (you cannot take the chance on it drowning, it is a very valuable animal)

                  Come on guys!

                  1) Stick the elephant in a boat
                  2) Stick the boat in some water
                  3) Mark the waterline...

                  what's next?

Y can also technically be considered a consonant...
