  • Death to Star Trek!

I got a kick out of this. It's a short one, so enjoy:

All of this is profoundly his opinion, yet it is delivered as if it were God's own Truth..

Heh.. sounds like someone we know. I wonder who..

I would normally be the last person to defend Star Trek but c'mon... SHATNER!! He's the man! Good actor, horrible actor, who cares, it does not matter, Shatner is the man.

Shatner has always been a living cartoon.

What I found funny was that supposedly James Doohan has disliked Shatner from the beginning ("I don't mind Jim Kirk, I just don't like Bill"), and then every single Trek that they did, they did together for the next 30 years.

"If you could fight anyone, who would you fight?"
"That's easy. Shatner. I'd fight William Shatner."

Orson Scott Card is a great writer, but this polemic comes across as sour grapes.

It's as if a show he was writing for didn't get "green lighted".
          P.S. You've been Spanked!

Actually ... he has several show that have recently been greenlighted. The Ender's Game movie is in pre-production (being penned right now, but Wolfgang Peterson has been signed on to direct), and he's got 3 video games and a comic book he's writing stories for.

Anyway ... Card has always been highly opinionated. I found this especially interesting because this is exactly how I feel about Star Trek. ST:TNG was the only Star Trek show that ever caught my interest for more than ... 3 episodes. Hell, my grandma even liked TNG (though Patrick Stewart may have had a hand in that ). But I've always found ST to be ... lacking in any hardcore SciFi element. TNG was good because they actually had good stories, decent actors, and interesting characters, and they didn't try to be hard-core SciFi.

IMO, Card's view on Star Trek hit the nail on the head. Death to Star Trek I say!!!

I disagree as to Star Trek's value assessment.

              Sometimes Art can be fun.

It doesn't always have to be "hard core".

Besides, the subtext of the "federation of planets" concept and the "prime directive" mantra give the series enough thought provoking substance to justify calling it SciFi.

                ...
Actually, if you watch them in order of filming that is simply not true.
                Especially for Spock.
And the relationships between the characters.

There are all kinds of Science Fiction.

Just because all wines aren't Merlot (a current favorite) doesn't mean they aren't wine. Even good wine.

Catch "Errand of Mercy". Classic Science Fiction.
There were several really good episodes, several really bad episodes, and the balance just so, so.
Not bad for the first true Science fiction series on TV.

                              Well, Bordeaux is ok.
                              But Chianti!?
