You can car pool with a CAR or two. And yes, that IS better than using an SUV.Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

I used to carpool to work with three others when I first got out of college. One time there was only two of us and I forgot my fellow carpooler when I skipped work early on a Friday. I stopped carpooling after that.<TABLE BGCOLOR=Red><TR><TD><Font-weight="+1"><font COLOR=Black>The world just changed, Sep. 11, 2001</font></Font-weight></TR></TD></TABLE>

I've got an idea for Americans to prevent power consumption. instead of taking the car every damn place, take a walk! I swear in my time in America every time I would walk somewhere I would see no other pedestrians and no cyclists whatsoever! It's ludicrous!
Bicycles for medium long journeys (like the cinema), walking for small journeys (like to the local shop for groceries). Problem solved!

Actually, a lot of us do. But there are just some places where traveling in anything but a car would be unwise.

streets in florida dont always have sidewalks. making it difficult to walk down the road for a stroll. as florida drivers cant drive making it a risk factor you just dont want to deal with on a day to day basis. lets see tomorrow should i walk to work and possibly end my life or should i drive. hmm what to do what to do.
also i believe places in the US are spread out. my parents have to drive 35 minutes to get to the grocery store. so if you were placed in that situation you wouldnt be walking i believe.

I don't bother with cars these days unless I need to transport a lot of stuff. I just stick with public transit, mostly the subway. People here complain about the subways all the time, but that's because New Yorkers complain about everything. Besides, being a subway buff, I know how to work around problems and delays whenever they occur, so my commute goes well most of the time.

Public transportation isn't much of an option for me. I live 30 miles from work, and it would involve 3 bus transfers, IF there's buses running when I want to go to/from work. I live in the city, and take my bike when I can though. My Sentra gets 30mpg, which is pretty good for this high up.Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. I have a family which includes a wife, our youngest son Erik (7), 5 grandkids (counting Sabrina's 3 stepkids) and sometimes a 120 lb dog. Just how does one get that gang around without at the least a minivan, SUV or a full sized van?
I can tell you from experience that ONE minivan/SUV gets further on a dollar with that kind of load than the two or three cars it would take to do the same job.
This is the same advantage that any mass transit has over the number of cars it would take to carry the same number of passengers.
Example:
Our Dodge Grand Caravan can carry 8 passengers and gets about 27 mpg on a road trip.
Lets say that a given sedan gets 32 mpg. To transport the same load as the van would take two such vehicles.
The average sedan fuel economy for the trip has to be calculated as half that of any one sedan because twice as much gas is consumed due to the multiple vehicles
Because of this the avg. fuel economy for the sedans to transport the same number of people will only be 16 mpg.
In order for a pair of sedans to match the fuel economy of a van/SUV on such a trip each would have to get twice the mileage of the larger vehicle, or in this example 54 mpg.
Ain't gonna happen unless the sedan is a Mini and carrying midgets.
