I'm glad I like unsweetened tea so much.

I'm getting there. I take green tea unsweetened, black with a dash of sugar or honey... and I'd never put ANYTHING in white tea. White tea is the stuff of dreams. Mmm...

I can't do coffee black yet, though.

hmm the whey protein I drink once a day has aspartame.. the one I used to use has acesulfame potassium.. bleh.

There's so much conflicting information out there it's amazing.. compelling stories about a jump in brain tumor rates which coincides closely with the time aspartame was introduced..

          Here (kinda sensationalistic site): http://www.aspartame.com/

          then there's this: http://www.aspartame.net/media/opinion/op_aspint.html

what links do you have, Jason? Anything on acesulfame potassium?

Nothing in particular. You're right that most of what you find on the Internet is sensationalist. I can go dig out Julie's thesis (or have her dig it out is more like it) and try to find some real sources, everything she pulled was from medical journals or the online medical databases, and a lot of it has since been "discredited" by the cola companies and the Nutrasweet(tm) people.

But I'm not a big fan of ANYTHING artificial.

Even high fructose corn syrup. Its glycemic index is off the charts, and it tastes different. It's the whole reason people think Coca Cola Classic is DIFFERENT from "Old Coke"... because when they went back to the original recipe they had stopped using real sugar about halfway through the run of "New Coke". So "Coke Classic" tastes different than the pre-"New Coke" cola did.

Gotta love it. Fake = bad.

Have you guys heard for Stevia?

I've heard of it, but not tried it or ever seen it in stores.
              P.S. You've been Spanked!

That's the reason why candy today isn't as good as the candy from when we were kids.

                  Wikipedia is your friend..

that one's pretty neutral.. leaning towards being anti-aspartame.

We got fatter (kids especially) in the early 80s due to several factors:

                  1) Home computers (using one requires sitting on your ass)

                  2) Video games/consoles (same)

                  3) 99 channels of shite to watch on TV (same)

                  4) Hysteria about everyone being a pedophile (moms wouldn't let kids go outside and play as much)

                  5) High Fructose Corn Syrup (pretty bad as far as I'm concerned.. metabolised in the liver and turns to fat)

                  6) Ronald Mc Donald and friends enticing kids to eat fast food, while busy parents no longer cook, or even have a regular mealtime.

I saw it in the store recently, bought some, but didn't try it.

In the states, the FDA has not approved it as a sweetener, but they have no control over "dietary supplements," so that's how it's sold.

But I hit the Internet, and found that although small doses appear perfectly fine, moderate doses are linked to cancer rates and male infertility. Too risky for me, I took the bottles back unopened.

He,he, talking is easy Some days I have to be wakened 72h in a row, I really don´t know I I would do it without coffee... I quit smoking a year ago, please let me have one addiction

But seriously - it's EASY to burn 200-500 calories a day. Go for a jog... or have sex.
That´s really not that easy. To burn 500 calories I think you need something like 1,5h running...

I've heard it's good but that it tastes funny... kinda licorice-ish. Not the sort of thing I want in my coffee.

But I know nothing about its health effects.

Nah. Last I heard a good hump burned off 350 or so. So do it twice.

Yep. You'll note that although they don't make the accusation, that the old FDA director REFUSED to approve aspartame... and the NEW one that Reagan appointed who did approve it... was later accused of taking bribes from Searle, and then went to WORK for Searle. Oopsie!

The entire history of the substance is chock-full of bribes, payoffs, and bad science... and there is no denying the empirical evidence. Give Julie so much as a SIP of diet coke, and it's off to Imitrex-land for her.

Actually she has to be SUPER careful, she can't take ANY migraine drugs while she's pregnant. The other day she woke up, got an aura in the shower, nearly killed herself getting OUT of the shower, and had to feel her way back to bed.
