Michigan as a State income tax of about 4.5% and the city of Detroit also has its own income tax of about the same size, which you have to pay the largest percentage of even if you only work there and live elsewhere.

Now you know why Detroit is dying....everyone and their jobs moved to the suburbs to avoid paying it.

Gah - We pay about $4500/year in property tax, in addition to state income tax of 28.5% of our federal tax burden.

Several states have no income taxes.. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Some even have decent sales tax rates to go with it. In South Dakota and Wyoming, sales taxes are only 6%. Property taxes here vary greatly.. there is a municipal tax and a tax for the school district you happen to fall into. If you live outside any incorporated area, your taxes are not too bad usually.. then it just depends on the school district.

Now, I think we would all be quite happy to pay our taxes if we could all agree and approve of what they got spent for. But in a multicultural society, too often one culture pays the taxes and another gets the benefits. In Texas, illegal immigrants are the big problem.. when a Mexican girl gets knocked up (believe it or not, there is serious peer pressure among young Mexican males to knock up a teenager and just leave her to her own devices.. somehow they think it makes you a real man ) all she has to do is get herself over the border before the kid is born and said kid is then a US citizen with full rights, meaning we get to pay more because of some other culture's stupid machismo rituals. When we have to pay more, then responsible us decides we can't have more children because we don't have the money to care for them properly anymore, so the children of irresponsible people (only some of whom are mentioned above) take over. People get stupider and less responsible and the culture that was previously able to afford to be civilized is eaten away as a result.

No, they're not. If you actually educated yourself, they contribute far more to the system than they take. They pay income tax. They pay social security. They pay sales taxes. They don't collect on the vast majority of the services - a man with a fake SSN cannot collect on it, even if they lived here to grow old (though many or most go back). Their net effect is a positive cash flow for the government.

FYI most illegal immegrants don't make enough money to pay income taxes, federal or state, because those below the official "poverty level" are exempt. If they pay SS taxes it's by accident since their employers could get in trouble for hiring them in the first place.

About the most the govt. actually gets out of them is their sales taxes, and on what they make that about pays for the postage it takes for the store to send them to the state.

In return for this they get full food stamps, welfare, medicaid, access to our schools and about every other benefit citizens can get but without the responsibility of even learning English

Yes, they'd be exempt. And they'd be able to get their witholdings back. Except they can't file, because they're illegals. And they're not paying SS "by accident." They get a job, they sign a paper that says they are legal to work, they fill out SS paperwork with a forged number, and they start contributing. At that point, it's not the employer's fault, and they're in the clear if they're investigated. At least, that's how it works around here. I've got a number of bilingual friends that work right between both cultures.
