I know you're not fishing for sympathy, but I wanted to express my condolences at your loss, and hope that you manage to get through this. I can only imagine your loss, and hope that you manage to get through this.
If anything positive is to come of this, it is that this post has encouraged me to remind the people that I care about that I do love them. I really don't know whether this will make you feel any better, but you're certainly right, we do take for granted the fact that the people that we love are just there and that all of this could suddenly be taken away.

My deepest condolences...
During my (short) career at the university, I had to attend funerals for 2 of my students (one, a close friend of mine, had leukemia; the other one had an accident).
There are no words for a loss like that.
