Well since the link doesn't work me I can only say this.
In the Modern Society you've got to be very careful around Children becuase of the following.
1) Being accused of sexually molesting the Child. Either by the child or a by passer
2) Accused of physical assualt on the Child. Either by a child or a by passer
Only approach the Child if theres plenty of Witness's. Otherwise if you've a Mobile contact the Police before you intervene. If you haven't a Mobile and you know where an another adult is, preferable a different sex get them to come with you.

It's too bad, the links worked for some and not others, must be service provider or browser issue.
Anyway, what the video (the topic of this post) was about, is that if yo usee a child yelling for help, saying stuff like "he is not my dad...help...help..." repeatadly what would you do?
So they went to the streets of NYC and tested peoples reactions, and surprisingly no one except a couple of guys hours later actually did something, people heard the little girl scream, even walked by her as the man (both acting the part with police on standby) tried to abduct the girl.
They even interviewed one of the padestrians, a yonge lady about her lack of reactions, she replied..."oh I thought someone else would come to her rescue" , what the heck was that?
Anyway, the moral of the story is that people these days are not taking these issues seriously, seeing people in destress is commonly interpreted as "it's not my problem"
So it's just to raise awareness, and yes I agree with PIT, in that you have to be very carefull but not dismiss the whole thing and walk away.

Even young kids play freely here, even after dark in winter - and women can walk alone at night: OK, there have been cases of a group of ados wolf-whistling or calling after an attractive young woman, but never with molestation. Mugging is unknown. Exception: this past winter there was a serial rapist (4 attacks) at large in a Nicosia suburb but he was caught by a police decoy and is now very firmly locked away. His case has not yet been tried, but his view will be obstructed by bars for at least 15 years, and that's no joke here.Brian (the devil incarnate)

Unfortunately, there can be situations without witnesses. When you approach the child, I think it is important to realize that it may be fearing you (even if you have good intentions). This to the extent where it may be better to keep your distance (but still help & communicate, but from a distance with which the child feels comfortable).
Shame that society has evolved like that..
Along those lines, I once saw an experment in Amsterdam. Two guys were breaking into a car in broad daylight in a relatively busy street (police knew of this and was told not to react to emergency calls). It took well over 15 minutes for the first call was made to the police. Many people just walked by, but virtually none did anything. Some addressed them, but when the guys said it was their car the passers-by just let it be. Suprising, an elderly like addressed the guys, asking what they were doing, and kept inquiring. But in total, the number of calls made to the police in 2 hours time was shockingly low...
Last week, a 17-old boy was stabbed to death in Brussels Central station (is underground!), by 2 guys stealing his MP3 player. While I can imagine this all goes very fast, and that many people didn't see/realise what was going on; it has started the whole society-control debate again. Government is now on full alert to catch them (they have security camera footage, and possible a GSM signal).

I know where KVH is coming from.
I can remember a few years ago when i didn't have a Mobile walking too town at 8:30 in the morning. No one around bar the odd car and I could hear this child crying somewhere near. A few feet further a young girl appeared around five crying "Daddy Daddy where are you"
The child turns back and I see a car parked with the passenger door open no sign of the father who's left the child and gone off somewhere. The child went back to the car still crying.
Imagine if I did go to the child. Daddy comes round the corner see's child with stranger and crying. Guess who'll be in trouble.
Suppose I went with the child looking for father. Father sees child going with a strange man and guess again who'd be in trouble.
I did look around for the father but didn't see him anyway and since there was no one around and child got back in the car I left it.
There was a day before the PC crowd took over that the person who'd be in trouble would have been the father for clear neglect. Nowadays everyone is presumed a pervert.

Last week a guy nabbed a girl off of the light rail here in Portland. Several people ran after him and tackled him. Another person watched over the mom's purse when she dropped it to run after the guy.
Although, it's believed that the abductor actually attempted the kidnapping because he was homeless and wanted to go to jail.Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra 9, Opteron 170 Denmark 2x2Ghz, 2 GB Corsair XMS, Gigabyte 6600, Gentoo Linux

Now compare that with some anonymous persons who would, if they could, murder every criminal (or person assumed to be same without real proof), carry arms at all times, consider everyone with skins or hair slightly darker than yours as personae non gratae, idem those who speak a foreign language or worship with different religious views, who approve of war and other violence, who choose to shop at Walmart etc.
And you have the gall to accuse me of being an unhinged witchhunter? I consider that as a personal insult which is unworthy of any forum member. Maybe Sasq may have something to say about ad personam attacks.Brian (the devil incarnate)
