Az, as far as I can remember in Europe water heated radiators are the primary choice of heating for home. Don’t know about the new build homes.

In US, forced air is the most common type of a heating for homes. The reason is, it doubles as central air conditioning using the same air ducks and air furnace to pump the cold air around the house, just like it pumps the heat in the winter.

So, in the winter, think of it as a HUGE hair dryer heating your house.

That’s why there is a need for humidifiers.

I use the Breathe-ease or non-iodized salt in it.

Cheapest place for the Breathe-ease is Amazon.com. They have a 2 pack for 24.95

The Hydropulse "blows" out stuff that decongestants and neti pot type rinses can't touch.
The first day I had mine I used it 4 times and was totally amazed at what it flushed out of my sinuses.

Will have to check this out, thanks for the info.

My entire family had this bug last week. Nasty sucker. Congestion, cold, fever, aching all over, unable to sleep, runny nose... I don't recommend getting it.
We've had two rounds of flu so far; intestinal and respiratory. Our bouts with intestinal flu were horrid, and it took 3 weeks to fully recover. IMO this weakened us for round 2 - respiratory flu.

Well I'm now on Levoquin (once a day, ten days) and Nasonex. Goodly sinus infection, apparently. Yum. Naptime.

Ok so the inevitable update... I'm starting to feel much better. Have been for a couple days. Went to work as normal yesterday after spending most of last week just miserable and unable to get anything useful done.

Still draining pretty nasty stuff from my sinuses, but most of it is now NOT bloody. Yay!

                    Still, some current issues remain:

                    - Soft palate swelling. A couple of days this week my uvula has been hanging so low that it got caught every time I swallow. I looked online and normally this is due to either irritation, infection, or dehydration. Check to all three, so I guess it's more water for me! But this is super annoying - makes napping difficult since I wake myself up snoring, and just feels irritating/irritated all day long.

                    - Throat still quite irritated from the post-nasal drip.

                    - Things taste funny. Parts of my tongue - especially the parts that routinely touch the throat and soft palate - feel weird and everything that passes over them has a bitter or harsh taste.

On the upside, I've consumed FAR less caffeine the past week or so, and the withdrawal seems to have been rolled into the flu in general. So I'm getting away with one mug of coffee in the morning and one small tea later on (4PM or so). Of course, I _did_ fall asleep on the couch last night at like 8PM. Hmm...

And we have located an AWESOME new tool in our herbal arsenal. Airborne Nighttime formula... just vitamins and antioxidants in a fizzy tablet, but the nighttime one has two important benefits:

                    1. Dissolves in hot water instead of cold, makes a "tea" of sorts.
                    2. Has a soothing herbal blend in it - valerian root, chamomile, lemongrass, etc.

                    Very good stuff!

Well yeah, once a year or so we seem to get something nasty enough that it warrants "what the F*** was that?" status. I mean, a couple months ago we had a stomach bug, that was mundane and lasted the usual 12 hours + recovery. And we get colds probably on the order of once a month, the kids bring them home from daycare. But this... this was entirely different and unusual.

You get colds every month???? Wow, that's insane! I get a cold once every 2-3 years, and even then it's just a small cough or a runny nose, never gets worse than that. I guess I can count myself lucky that I have such a resilient immune system. Even when my GF, friends, family or roomate got sick, I still felt fine.

I saw an immunity expert on TV the other day who said that HEALTHY kids with good immune systems in school/daycare get, on average, 8-12 colds a year. That's roughly one a month, give or take.

                              ARGH!

Turns out that Levofloxin (Levoquin) is:

                              a. counterindicative to advil/ibuprofen (oops, nobody told me!)
                              b. causing a nasty mouth reaction for me

So it's back to the doctor tomorrow! ARGH!

It would be nice one per month...... .

In reality the 8~12 times mostly does happen during the winter months. So as soon as they get over one, it's like almost time for a rerun.... .

P.S. Hope you feel better, I have my usual Sinus infection back, 4th or 5th time since winter started..... .
