Will Smith Can Now Say 'I Am Legend': $30M Friday Debut & $80M Weekend!

'Chipmunks' Open To Cheeky $40M Wkd

SATURDAY AM: Some amazing numbers were posted Friday for this weekend's No. 1 and No. 2 movie releases. Warner Bros' I Am Legend opens closer to $80 million than the studio's hoped-for $50 million from Friday through Sunday after making a whopping $29.6 million Friday in 3,606 theaters for first place. This more than demonstrates that Will Smith is now the biggest U.S. box office stud bar none and breaks his previous opening record (I Robot's $62 mil in summer). This also will easily be the biggest December movie opening ever.

Not only did I Am Legend soar past the numbers for King Kong's and Narnia's December debuts, but it looks likely to pass all three of the Lord Of the Rings trilogy's Christmas-timed openings as well, including Return Of The King's record-setting $72.6 mil.) The humongous hit is a badly needed life preserver for Warner Bros' drowning movie division, which I'm told didn't even have time to do a research screening on the film since it came in so late.

Has anybody here seen it? Reviews all say it's B- or so. I'm curious. I recently read the novel, and can't imagine it translating well to the screen. The trailer makes it look like they made significant changes.

I rarely take scio-fi movie reviews too seriously as half the reviewers seemingly don't like the genre and half the rest wouldn't know a good movie of any kind it dropped on their head wearing a 500 lb safe.

I Am Legend has been on-screen twice before; "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price and "Omega Man" with Charlton Heston, both pretty good flicks IMO but they too changed the novel in major ways. In this one Will Smith definitely isn't a white man as in the novel, and the scenes and particulars are changed, but then I don't think moviegoers would like the novels ending with him in the role.

The most faithful screen version of I Am Legend I've seen so far is Vincent Price's The Last Man On Earth. Haven't seen the Will Smith version yet but judging from the previews this looks like a cross between Last Man and The Omega Man.

Also I Am Legend took place on the west coast, Los Angeles, I think. They always change the local to New York for no other reason than it's so iconographic.

I own Price's Last Man On Earth. It has some excellent scenes (namely the last one) - and they did a good job of making him seem real lonely, but overall I found it B-movie-ish. I think the budget was considerably smaller than some of his other old movies.

It was a pretty low-budget, Italian production.

when I first saw the trailers I thought this movie was a blend between "War of the Worlds" and "Resident Evil"

I will buy the DVD for sure

                Cheers,

I saw it Friday night, Will Smith Played the role very well, but I was let down at the end, but then again there are only so many ways you can end a movie like this.

If you want to see it, wait till it goes out on DVD

It just came out in the US ?
Its been at the Cinema here for a few months already...

I will never get why they do this...why can't they just do GLOBAL releases...

I haven't been to see it at the cinema, cos i hate the subtitles...its as if i'm watching a film in english for the hearing impaired, AND they get most of the word translations wrong, and they don't translate the full sentences...i then sit there complaining to myself (quietly)...

                    Roll on DVD

edit : I thought it was basically a remake of the Omega Man, but i'll have to wait to see it ...

Without giving away the ending, it ends sorta the same way as Omega Man...after telling my old man about the movie and asking him...

If it's relatively faithful to the novel, then yeah it's going to have a pretty grim ending.

Because the actors can't be everywhere at the same time to promote it...although some of them probably think they can
