Saw it last night in 3D. Yes we enjoyed it. Perhaps not to the extremes that some people do. That might be due to where I was in the auditorum (~4/5 of the way back so fairly high, 1/4 in from the left edge of the screen. I think that auditorium holds ~500) or it might be due to my generally poor 3D vision anyway as my left eye is fairly week. I found anything that was supposed to be forward of the screen and in the right of the frame to be quite ineffective and obviously frame limited.

We sat further back because we were worried about the potential sick-making effect of 161mins of 3D. I think if I were to see another 3D film I'd sit lower down and more centrally if I could.

Another problem was, I think, due to needing to wear the 3D glasses over my prescription glasses. In high contract scenes such as some of the logos on screen before the film starts there was a very definite ghost image significantly below the real image: If there was a row of text across the middle of the screen, a ghost would appar about 20% up from the bottom. This of course wasn't noticeable during the film.

That aside, I knew I was taking a gamble subjecting myself to it and overall was pleasantly surprised. I did check my watch a few times but I was never bored. And I am astounded at the world Cameron has created.

This was pretty interesting. A look at the science of Avatar from the perspective of an astophysicist and SciFi movie lover.

Merrick here Our longtime friend and frequent contributor Copernicus saw AVATAR and wanted to share some thoughts about the film's science. Copernicus is a quite a scientist himself, so this is a very fascinating read & we really...

Saw it in 3D yesterday, loved it. I give it an 8.5/10. While the story wasn't the deepest it held together. The execution, effects were awesome.

Saw this today in Imax 3D. Very good. Despite being there two hours before screening to get tickets there were about 5 left for the 1.30PM screening. We were 4 rows from the back but rite out at the end of a row, not the best place for 3D .. Will book online next time It was nice to see the theater full as apposed to about 20 people there when we get to most of the movies. Liked the 20th Century Fox 3D opening logo.. Would be nice if the next Star Trek movie could also be released in Imax 3D..

JJ Abrams Talks Star Trek Sequel, Shatner, Nimoy, Nick Meyer & more

Today Paramount held a press event in LA for their fall home video releases, including Star Trek. One of the Q&A sessions was with Star Trek director JJ Abrams who, in addition to questions about DVD and Blu-ray sets, ended up talking about the Star Trek sequel, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nick Meyer, and more. Get all the details below.
              >
              >
Question: Any chance of you shooting the next Star Trek film in 3-D?

JJ Abrams: It is funny. Paramount talked to me about doing the first one in 3-D and, having it only be my second film, I was petrified just at the addition–I thought it would be another dimension of pain-in-the-ass. I thought I would be like, "oh my god, I just want to make a decent 2-D movie.” I was so worried that, instead of being a decent 2-D movie, it would have been a bad 3-D one. So I’m open to looking at it because now I feel a little bit more comfortable and, if I, in fact, direct the sequel to our Star Trek film, 3-D could be really fun, so I’m open to it. What I’ve seen of Avatar makes me want to do it, because it’s so crazy-cool looking.

                Thanx for the post.

Wondered if Avatar would make a few sit up and take note. Especially for action movies..

                    4 days later:

Less than three weeks later, there's no doubt. Director James Cameron's science-fiction epic on Sunday became only the fifth movie in history to gross more than $1 billion worldwide and, by far, was the fastest to do so.
I heard a news Report that its already the 4th highest grossing film of all time and will most likely be the second highest grossing movie of all time if it keeps going like it is...No bad for Cameron..having the number one and two top grossing movies in the past 10 years!

I've seen it twice so far...
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

Which means Cameron can make any script he damned well chooses from here on.

                      His list:

Battle Angel (2011) (based on the Battle Angel Alita Manga. In the 26th century, a female cyborg is rescued from the scrapheap by a scientist)

The Dive (about the French free-diver Audrey Mestre)

                      Heavy Metal (segment)

Terminator 5 (yes, he's taking over the Terminator series)

Forbidden Planet (prequel as we've discussed)

                      Fantastic Voyage 3D (!!)

Nagasaki Deadline (espionage thriller about an FBI agent's mission to thwart a terrorist attack)

And of course an Avatar sequel.

                        And Beautiful! As in WOW!

I heard a guy come out saying "How the hell is anyone going to top that?"

Where the heck was Cameron when they made that awful movie with the same title as Heinlein's great "Starship Troopers"?

Yup....impressive as hell it was. Jeezzz....what sights to behold.

3D is certainly coming into it's own. Just heard today that Peter Jackson wants to make both 2D and 3D versions of The Hobbit, then have his F/X guys start re-mastering the Rings trilogy in 3D. Hobbit looks likely, but if Warner will pay for remastering Rings is another matter.

Yes, such software exists but it'll take 7 months of rendering.

Also in the works for 3D remastering are Titanic and Star Wars. Cameron has already had a few minutes of it converted and is extremely pleased. Lucas of course will never miss a chance to wring a few more Dinero's out of his baby.

given heinleins glorification of a totalitarian society & its military in the book, and looking at what cameron wanted avatar to be about, I´d guess he was consciously staying far, far away.

And yet he wasn't too proud to make an old fashioned Cowboys and Indians movie.
Ok, well, at least a very colorful remake of "Dances with Wolves."

What I thought was great about the 3D was that it was not used as a demo of 3D effects.
Nothing poking out over the audience, or wreaking your immersion by being exaggerated.
It was just an integral part of the visual experience.
This is the first 3D movie I've seen like that. Admittedly a small sample though.
