The official point of view of the Vatican is no longer creationism, but rather "steered evolution since the big bang". IMO, it is a clever way out, as it does not exclude the possibility of extra-terrestrial life, and does not dismiss science - apart from the "steering" of the evolution, but this is not elaborated upon further. So as science tells more, they move their benchmark.
I've just recently started watching Star Trek: Enterprise, and I also like it.
Lost also became quite religious, but it did not specify any religion, and somehow it worked for me.

For the record; after the publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859 the Roman church took no position, then in 1950 Pope Pius XII expressed approval of scientific inquiry into its ramifications.
I would also remind folks that science too has modified its understaning of evolution away from Darwinism's gradual change to include gene drift, gene transfer and mechanisms that cause rapid changes.
Bottom line is that both religion and science have evolved their thinking since 1859.

It is one thing for scientific statements to evolve, as science itself advances. It is a whole other thing to expect a common belief - not based on experiments or such - to change.

"The universe shows evidence of the operations of mind on three levels. The first level is the level of elementary physical processes in quantum mechanics. Matter in quantum mechanics is [...] constantly making choices between alternative possibilities according to probabilistic laws. [...] The second level at which we detect the operations of mind is the level of direct human experience. [...] It is reasonable to believe in the existence of a third level of mind, a mental component of the universe. If we believe in this mental component and call it God, then we can say that we are small pieces of God's mental apparatus"
