Which lends support for the idea that some catastrophic event in Mars' early history created the Hellas basin and Alba Mons, and in the process blew away most of the planet's atmosphere and hydrosphere. Phobos and Deimos are probably aggregated from the material that was blasted into space, including quite a bit of the water.
Maybe THAT'S where we should be looking for evidence of early life.
Not necessarily now that NASA has re-examined the data from Phoenix and found evidence of liquid water just under the surface at the pole, of all places.
