You say Cameroon is very cold, but I can't stop thinking it must be in central Africa...OK, how about on Zanzibar Island? Alternatively, Tunisia?

Not Central Africa. Tunisia is warmer, but still rather cool.

Hmmmm...some ruins in Dades Gorge look awfully similar (also when it comes to surroundings...)

I'll also add Foum Zguid to the list...let's see which of us turns out the winner Unless of course one of this thread's resident experts pops up with the answer

Draa valey might be another candidate...generally it seems there's a lot of places like this in the three valleys mentioned...

                        Guess what? I'm embarrassed

The photo in question was downloaded with the name of the place and it appears that the name may be wrong. I looked at many other photos of the same place and none resemble it. In fact, the topography of the named place (Ouarzazate) is not mountainous. I would have thought that such striking rock formations would have been a tourist attraction, but I could not find them, using any of many keywords. I can conclude that shot was either photoshopped or is in some very out-of-the-way spot up in the Atlas mountains (I used Atlas as one of my original keywords). My humble apologies for having misled you. I suggest Nowhere takes over as having been the first to suggest Morocco, which is as near as I can be sure. Sorry!

                          OK, guess where/what

(BTW Brian, I've found something that was strikingly similar...but in much worse condition; one of the terms I provided shows it sooner or later in Google image search)

                            Poland?

It is the salt mine at Wieliczka, near Kraków in southern Poland.

Hmm...I must search harder for something appriopriate next time (OTOH...I have enough of searching photos today )

Curiosity: everything you see on those pictures, apart from obvious things like lighbulbs, candles, cords/structural cores of chandeliers is made of salt.
