Ah monument - was looking for a 'temple'. If it's in Sunderland then the monsters could be the locals?

Indeed Penshaw Monument, though not in Sunderland, but close to Chester-le-Street. The monster is the Lambton Worm and the connection to the monument is at http://www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk/...Washington.htm

The current Lord Lambton (although he renounced his peerage) has had a chequered political career that all but ended when he was photographed naked in bed with two "ladies of the night". Now an old man.

Hmmmm! It certainly looks like Central Europe but never owned by the Austrians? That rules out most of Central Europe, including where I thought of in the first place, Switzerland, which was governed by Austrians (Graf Gessler & Co.) prior to 1291, whent the three primitive cantons declared their independence.

I suppose it may be E. France but Hitler was an Austrian, so that rules that out. Guess it can't be in Europe.

It's in Europe, and while I was thinking Habsburgs and not Hitler, still, not even Adolf ruled here. That should narrow it down a bit.
