              Name: Jerry

Occupation: Employed by City of Boise/Idaho/USA.

(I work with the news media locally and on public education projects of the Department of Public Works. Formerly, I was a Boise, Idaho television newsman - anchor of the 'News at Noon' newscast on the NBC affiliate KTVB Channel 7...

...from 1987 until spring of 1996.)

              Country: USA

Family: Still single, but if I could find the right woman to share my passion for computers and editing digital video, well, you never know :-). I have three younger brothers and both parents are still living.

Interest: Video editing, computers, backpacking/hiking the mountains, beaches and deserts of North America's Pacific Northwest.

What do you video?: When I started in television news, I actually shot and edited my own pieces using 3/4 inch gear. That was at station KPVI (then a small ABC news affiliate). When I moved to KTVB - I was strictly an on-air "personality" and I did lots of field interviews, but I left the editing and the photography to the photographers on staff.

Now, I use a Sony DCR-VX1000 three-chip DV camcorder at work to shoot press conferences, video of public works department facilities, and supplemental interviews.

At home, I use a simple one-chip JVC GR-DVM5U DV camcorder. I use it to record my backpacking adventures. I also use it for occasional weekend work that comes my way via my side business:

              http://www.jonesgroup.net

How long worked with video: Since high school decades ago.

Video Qualif/Level: Very experienced, but I'm always learning new things. I believe very few people are truly "expert" in all aspects of video. I don't consider myself to be very strong in sophisticated effects and motion graphics. But I do consider myself to be fairly strong in terms of writing to video.

              Rating of this forum: Excellent

Well I spose I'd better join in the fun (I did try on Sunday but the net connection was dire).

Although many of you know me as "This Idiot", my real name is Chris Day. I'm a freelance computer analyst/programmer, specialising in commercial applications on ICL mainframes. I live close to Birmingham, in the midlands of the UK, although I frequently have to stay away from home when work demands it - that's the "joy" of being freelance. Currently I'm working in Lancashire, in the Northwest of England, which means that I spend 4 nights a week away from the family.

Which neatly leads me into "introducing" my family. Firstly, my beautiful wife (of 19 years come July),Moira. Then we have (chronologically) Angela (17 yrs, dedicated student, loadsa fun when she isn't being a PIA), Huw (15 Yrs, insular, wants to be an engineer, probably in robotics), Toby (13 years, happy-go-lucky, hasn't a clue about what he wants, still less how to get there).

Interests ? Jeez, don't seem to have time for those anymore. I love motorsport, and rallied a Mark 2 Ford Escort for 3 seasons before it got too expensive. I follow Formula1 instead these days.

What do I video ? Well the truth is that I don't. OK, I grab a few family shots, and the cam goes everwhere with me, but mainly I use a VCR as an input device to the many reviews/projects that I do (except DV stuff that gets the family shots that I managed to take on holiday last easter). As a result, I'm still in the bottom grade as a cameraman, although I'm up to medium when it comes to capture and editing. The problem here is the current rate of software releases - I barely get time to finish a tutorial on one before the next one turns up. So I haven't even had chance to get a decent play with Prem5.1c or MS6 yet (another by-product of having to work away from home, commute at weekends and compress a weeks worth of family commitment into a weekend).

How do I rate this forum ? Well what can I say ? It's my life, I'm here every day reading everything that goes on, replying where I can (if necessary). I'd like a lot more time to develop the site itself (of which the forum is just one part), but when I've got the time, I ain't got the money (and vice versa). One of these days when I win the lottery....

Any other comments? Yeah, although the forum is active and expanding, the rest of the site is only drawing 50% of the site hits that it was 12 months ago. Now that's due to my own lack of attention - BUT there's plenty of opportunity for site regulars to submit articles for publication. Email me if you think you can contribute.

                              Laurie U.

I work as a digital spatial database compiler for Crown Land Registry Services, Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks(what a mouthfull). I use a desktop PC(PIII 500, NT 4) in a Unix environment running Arc/Info software. Oracle is the textural side of the database.

I'm married (almost 30 years) with two post-teen daughters.

I cycle-commute year round(one advantage to living in Victoria), have rowed a bit with my daughters at Elk Lake(the Canadian National Rowing Team sometime training center) and am currently trying to rehab a very unstable bad back to start running again. In a former life I was actually quite competitive. A master's 10K PR of 34:19 probably doesn't mean anything to you non-runners out there.

Right now I'm looking out my office window watching the sun rise over the Oak Bay tweed curtain right across the water (sort of) from Patrick's home in Vancouver. BTW, Patrick, if you saw my invective about the current state of Vancouver somewhere else in this forum, please don't take it personally. You're too young to remember the Vancouver of my youth.

My interest in video editing started when I built my second computer and wanted a decent vid card. My research turned up Chris' "This Idiot's" site and I bought a G200 Marvel(which is now in my wife's comp). I dabbled a bit but soon realized I needed better/faster components (larger HD etc.). Still haven't quite got there yet and since the demise of my old VHS camcorder more than a year ago the push to upgrade everything is less. I do have a G400 MAX and have been spending way too much time playing UT but having fun anyway. By the time I manage to get a digital camcorder I won't need my RRG any more .

I really enjoy lurking in the MURC forums and trying to keep current with NLE et al. I know that when I get editing again - Doc, Patrick, Elie and the rest will be there to bail me out.

                              Laurie (Papa_Phoenix - my UT alias) U.
