  • Can someone recommend me a good, quiet heatsink?

I got my new epox 8k7a+, 2x256Mb DDR DIMMs, and have just the CPU to decide upon. I've borrowed a 1Gig AXIA 'K' and that seems to do 1.33Ghz no problem, default voltage, however, I have one problem - heat.

I also borrowed a funny, no name copper-orb look-a-like and that's giving me temps of ~60'C when I have the 1Ghz chip at 133x10, under full load (prime95). It's not giving a single error after 15 mins or so of running, but still, I think over 60'C is a bit too high - I'd prefer to be at least 10'C lower.

So, what should I get? I DON'T want anything that uses a Delta fan - I've had one, and it was too noisy for me. The Thermoengine looks good, but I like the Zalmann flower heatsinks cos they're just so cool looking.

Suggestions please! (Also, a UK distributor for the Zalmann heatsinks would be cool)

UPDATE: I found who makes the hsf I have at the moment: Yate Loon (!).

Zalman CNPS3100G hands down whips the competition. Use the stock parts and add a shroud (funnel) that extends from the fan to the uppermost edge of the HS should get you around 0.21C/W rating.

With a properly ventilated case using this setup on a Tbird at ~1.4 gHz should yield ~40-45c peak cpu temp.

    Ultra quiet operation to boot

Use a better fan than included (stock is ~32cfm) and it'll drop even further.

      Hey Greebe.

According to Herr Doktor, the Zalman doesn't perform all that well.

      See here...

      The Swiftech MC462 Trounces it.....

Thanks Greebe. Incase I can't get a Zalmann though, I need to look at ones I know I can get.

Don't screw around get a Alpha PEP66 with a 27 CFM fan. The PEP is the most efficient Heat sink around. There are plenty of links to the shroud mod that puts the fan on top instead of the side.

What about the silverado? I dont know where you get it, but its meant to be totally silent.

Ive got plans on how to modify a mini copper orb, that Ill try out as soon as my new mobo turns up.

Ive got a 1.4MP, 256MB 2100 DRR, a Radeon LE with TV-out and a total of 4 60GXP HDDs sitting around waiting for the damn motherboard to turn up. It was meant to be here 2 days ago, now they are saying August 8th

EA, I think Tom's thermal genius is way off! He specs the Zalman CNPS 3100G at 0.45 C/W... that's way out of line with all my tests (almost three month's worth now) and with the manufactures specs.

Another thing is the requirement of low sound level... the MC462 is rated at 45 dBA vs 34.4 dBA for the Zalman setup... that a huge difference!

                  Fan specs on the Zalman
                  AddA
                  80x80x25
                  P# AD0812HS-A70GL
                  12vdc 0.25a 3.0w
                  3k rpm
                  38.6cfm
                  5.66 mm/Hg
                  34.4dBa

FYI, if you didn't already know, "CNPS" stands Computer Noise Prevention System... and it's true!

Lastly there is a big difference in price... the Zalman setup goes for around ~$45 and the MC462 is ~$75

Normally I would vote hands down for the Swiftech product, but in this case I won't... If you want loud, whiny and expensive, but otherwise excellent cooler, go for the MC462.

Now I just need to finish that bloody review so you can specifically see where I'm coming from!

I gotta nice quiet HSF combo.
I purchased the Thermalright SK6 copper heatsink (Not the cheapest heatsink in the world but a great performer).
The SK6 doesn't come with a fan from Thermalright, so the companies who sell it will be able to offer you different 60mm fans for it.
                      I opted for a YS-Tech 60mm.
This combo is really, really quiet and the cooling is amazing (So OK I do have some good case fans too (Quiet also) but I don't go above 47oC under full load).
It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.
Trolls might not be quick thinkers but they don't forget in a hurry, either

I should be getting in my Zalman's 3100CNPS today. If I get a chance to throw it in today I'll tell you what I think.

Yeah, that's a big difference is price. Those MC462's are pricey!!

The sound, tho, should just be a matter of the fan you put on it. You could always get a quieter fan...

Millennium Glaciator is not too loud and gives excellent performance if you believe overclockers.com (and I do). Stupid PayPal is why I don't have one yet. Long story.

According to the Zalman website these people sell their products in the UK. I've had a look at their website and there is no mention of them so I guess you'll have to phone them.
