Can someone recommend me a good, quiet heatsink?

Got my Zalman 3100CNPS Gold in on Friday and slapped it in using Arctic Silver II. Let me just start off by saying this thing is efficient! With my PIII overclocked from 750 MHz to 900 MHz @ 1.9 V I can put my hand on the heatsink and I only notice a mild temp increase over the case metal temp. I don't have any real temp gauging equipment so I can't write a review beyond basic touch and what my BIOS temp reads. With stock heatsink and fan I couldn't run at 900 MHz without my system failing at boot in Win2k/XP or dying after 30-60 minutes.

According to the Asus PC Probe, there is no temp increase on my CPU between 750 MHz @ 1.65 V and 900 MHz @ 1.9 V with the Zalman's at Idle. After playing Counter Strike (1024x768, all graphics/sound options up) or Diablo II: LoD (800x600 all but shadows on) for 3-4+ hours straight, the heatsink temp incease is nominal and can be touched with a bare hand. The PC Probe reports a temp increase on the CPU of no more than 5 C.

I had some crashing at first, but after reading the forums at Overclockers.com, I discovered that 900 MHz was the highest I was going to get with my motherboard. Apparently the CUSL2-C's don't like overclocking PIII's too much. A shame really, as everything else on that board is awesome.

Just as a note, I do have an exhaust fan sitting 3 cm from the heatsink to disipate any unwanted heat. The HSF fan is stock with no shroud and sits on top of the heatsink. It's running in normal mode, and I can't hear it, mainly because I have so many other case fans.

If you don't mind shelling out $43 USD for it, I highly recommend it!!!

@CHHAS... That's because they don't know squat about thermal dynamics and how to properly review HS's. I was disgusted in reading most every review myself... I basically boiled it down to, if you're going to do technical reviews learn how to do them properly first kiddies.

OK I built a new shroud (ie funnel/duct, whatever and made it work with any fan upto 120mm in size with an adapter plate. I also spread the fins out from the 120 degree pattern to 160 to increase airflow which previously would stifle a large/high cfm fan.

With my 120mm fan (115cfm) the 3100G does 0.12 C/W idle, 0.14 C/W peak (full tilt cpu crunching) while the cpu is burning up 80.4 watts of power!!!


I'm talking capable of keeping a non OCed 1.4 gHz TBird at 38c MAX (as long as the case is properly cooled/ventilated... aka blow hole)

note: This MAX temp measurement would be presuming the ambient case temp is 27c

I was playing around a lot with different coolers because I wanted to have a ultra quiet system.

All I can say is if you want a good cooler that is nearly inaudible go with the Silverado Noise Control

or

use an Alpha Heat Sink in combination with a 60mm -> 80mm adapter and 80mm Papst 12dB (airflow 33 m3/h) or 19dB (airflow 45 m3/h) cooler and make sure it is sucking, not blowing, on the heat sink.

Don't worry - speaking to Glenn at www.quietpc.com I've now got one on order. (£33 from there +del +vat). A touch expensive for a heatsink, but I want it now , plus from my conversations with Glenn @quietpc, their support is first class (friendly, helpful, prompt email replies).

I thought that My TB-1333MHz was a bit to hot with 56~59.

Changing from my Taisol to the SK6 lowered the temp with 10 degrees.
And I am still using the YS-Tech Fan From the taisol. (I have moded it with four screws....)
The online store i bought it from states that its a delta 60*10 21.19 CFM fan.

I will get my hands on something stronger but not as vibrating and noisy as the damn delta 7k rpm unit.

Make your own... don't stress the clip with the full mass of that kind of setup... it'll use the cpu as it's fulcum and possibly crunch the core
