  • Lots of bad IBM GXPs?

When I called IBM about processing an RMA for a 45gig 75GXP last week, I was told that they did not cross-ship anymore.
This is the reply that I got:

    Chuck,

Do to stock issues and shipping issues with the USA the Cross Shipment
program has been suspended for an indefinite length of time. We are hoping
to have this option available again soon. We apologize for the
inconvenience of not being able to cross ship a drive and thank you for
your patience as we work with the shipping companies and customs to get the
stock of drives needed inside the United States borders. We appreciate your
    patience.

    Thank you
    "Womans Name"
My guess is that so many GXPs are going bad that they can't keep replacement drives in stock.

When my replacement drive arrives I plan on running DFT in "Exercise" mode on it for 24 hours before I trust it in my raid again.
It might be a good idea for others to think about.

Or perhaps now that they check every package for anthrax shipping is too slow for them to resuplpy fast enough...
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

Mine failed on a 12 gig copy of files from one partition to another.
That's very hard on a drive. Lots of long head movements.
The failure was only partial. I was able to copy from it as
long as I avoided the affected area.

One of my 30GB GXPs failed after only 7 months. Only had one other drive fail at me and this was a crappy Quantum (and it was over two years old).

Well I do know the folks @ M are having the same issues also .

I did read sometime back that a servo head amp placement was to blame for overheating and thus causing major headaches as noted here.... but shortly thereafter the article was pulled.

Their conclusion was the drives were manufactured in Hungary and they supposely fixed it with the drives being manufactured in China (where my 60GXP is made)... but it doesn't appear that they have resolved that issue yet.

It's a sad sad day when you can't rely on the best HD manufacture anymore

Damn, I just got an IBM 20GB 60GXP about a month and a half ago. Where are the faulty drives manufactured? My drive was from Thailand. Fortunately, most of my data is on my Quantum 18GB drive, so if I lose the IBM it's not that bad.

Werent the 75GXP the ones with problems, and the 60GXP were made as a replacement for the 75GXP because of those problems? Or are the 60GXP buggy too?

I have two IBM 60GXP's sitting in my computer and have had zero problems. The 40 GB I've had for over 10 months, the 60 GB for over 6 months.

I have had my crappy fujitsu for over 2 years and the Quantum Fireball for 2 and a half I also have 2 ancient HP Storage Dual 5 1/4 " bay (Per Drive) SCSI drives that I like to cook eggs on... they are almost 6 or 7 years old... no problems there...

Guess as the speed on the hardware goes up the overall lifespan of the equipment goes down.

Sigh.. its not like the good old days...

Still have my first 486 with all original components chuggin away at my grandmas house for her e-mail... and its even a crappy compaq...
