I think really what would be nice would be for there to be a unified theme mechanism (I do believe that freedesktop.org is working on this) that will allow Gnome/KDE to switch the theme for GTK/QT at the same time. That way the idea for the MetaTheme that Gnome has would apply to most every application (since anymore, applications are almost always either QT or GTK). At least then those whining always about an inconsistant desktop look/feel wouldn't have anything to whine about.
I'm actually surprised that Xandros (since they are targetting the corporate desktop) did not do this themselves. They could easily have installed the gtk-plastig debian packages to make Gimp and Gnumeric fit in nicely with the rest of the desktop.
