Looks like those aren't the right modules. I don't know where you'd get those. If you order a CPU from compaq/HP, it would come with the module, but aftermarket, good luck finding them.

Honestly, unless you're running heavy duty SQL or Oracle or something, you probably won't notice the difference going to quad processing.

Those minimum specs don't mean much. As long as you have plenty of RAM, two 400s is fine.

cheers, although they still don't look right...

        don't worry mate.

My first goal is to get the raid array working and 2003 installed.

After that, I can go on the hunt for some RAM and some Xeons.

I know, but there is something fearsome about having quad CPUs with 8MB Cache!!!

But lets face it, my SQL needs are very modest.

Unfortunately, the free one won't work for your machine. You need version 5.5, which is $21.95.

                Check your PM.

Is there any reason why i shouldn't install a PCI USB adaptor?

                  PM answered.

I don't see any reason why not. It should work fine. No guarantees though...

As for the processors, if you really want to go quad (for the bragging rights), you should probably hold off until you find a set designed for your machine. That way they'd come with the power modules and the right heat sinks.

With Windows 2000, you can do software RAID 1. I think they removed that in XP, no idea what 2003 is like.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

There are two SCSI raid controllers. One on the IO card, and another in a PCI slot. I do have an adaptec 2100S which supports SCSI RAID 5.

I'll get it up and running first

But the upgrade potential of this beastie is huge (if you do a bit of lateral thinking) I can easily have a IDE RAID array in here

Thanks. I'll post an update when i can!
