Ballmer and McNealy were interviewed on CNBC this morning and Ballmer was asked about X-Box at the end of the segment. Ballmer looked like the typical tech executive who is smiling and trying to put on his best face while he contradicted the claim of their lackluster market share and he less-than-confidently pronounced they will dominate that market in the next year. He basically looked like this ...

I wouldn't buy anything from this man.

I've seen ballmer up close at a MS tech event for building secure web sites. he gave the closing key note. at the end there was an open q&a session. I found him to be honest and trustworthy. i'd buy and OS from him. And maybe even some Apps. I bet you have too!

Actually I've only bought two Microsoft products, Win98 and a rarely used SideWinder Pro joystick, both at the campus store from coupons given to me at a Microsoft lab.

I always thought Ballmer looked and acted like a football jock and he seemed more of a sales type and never though of him as suitable as a CEO or President. He's just Gate's pooch and would never do or say anything that wasn't puppeting his master's wishes. He looked like he was trying too hard to pronounce their control of the console business and he appeared to me as being too oily and nervous.

I reread the Money article on this announcement and it looks like they spent most of their time making this new box a digital media client rather than pushing the gaming platform per se. It does have some interesting ramifications when you look beyond the gaming application and it will be interesting to see how Microsoft builds on this architecture. Intel is also keenly interested in this space, as well as numerous smaller firms, and I think we finally have some good momentum going in this market.

do you need a larger hard drive for a console? as it stands the 8gb hdd on the XBox is spacious unless you are modding it and installing Linux or one of the alt loaders. seriously. a 20gb drive is the perfect size to be repackaged and sold for $75-$100 without selling it below cost.

Or if you're playing Knights of the Old Republic. I'm not exactly sure why its saves took so much space but if those idiots keep writing games like that, then they should outfit it with an 80GB drive.

I might buy one after about a year so all the kinks (Thomson drive, which I got stuck with ) are worked out. My problem is that it looks so stupid and cheap. Why can't they just make it look like a DVD player or something, classier might be a good word. The PS2 looked nice and even the Xbox had the black color which almost made up for the ridiculous shape.

They're going to provide numerous different color schemes for the front face plate so you can customize it somewhat.

What was wrong with your Thompson drive? I got an xbox at launch and have had no problems. I also have KOTOR and didn't notice that the save files took up too much space. After all these years my hard drive capacity is barley dented.

I've seen that clip some time back (years ago?). I can't recall what the event was. Doofus is right. What an embarrassment to the industry.
