  • Pentium D 805 up and running ;)

    OK, so i bought a Pentium D 805 a while back to replace my Celeron D 351.
Wasnt compatible with the mobo i had, so just put it in drawer.
A company owed me a reimbursment, so i took a ASUS P5WD2 to install the Pentium D into.
Finally got round to ordering some G-Skill DDRII-800 444-12, after waiting over a month for some Crucial Ballistix DDR-800 to be told they didnt have any. Even though their website still says 4-7 days delivery...
    Anyway, down to it:

    System:
    Intel Pentium D 805 (SL8ZH)
    ASUS P5WD2
    2x512Mb G-Skill DDRII-800 (DDRII-800@4-4-4-12)
    Raptor 36Gb SATA (Boot)
    Generic DVD-Rom IDE
    GeForce 6600GT 128Mb
    Enermax PSU EG701AX-VE (600W)

    Problems:

1- When exiting the BIOS, or saving the BIOS, the PC shuts down, waits, then Boots.
Its annoying, as the CPU is not cooled for a few seconds during reboot. Anyone else had this? (I'm not using any of the onboard Fan headers, and the CPU fan is now on its own Externel 50W PSU.)

2- When in the BIOS, and choosing the "Hardware Monitoring" tab, it takes about 10-15seconds to react, as if the computer is frozen, but it isnt...anyone?

    So far:

Just using Memtest as a beginner to see if it can reach the 4GHz mark and at what temps.
    43°C at 3.7GHz @185FSB
    45°C at 3.8GHz @ 190FSB
Having to kick the voltage up quite a bit on the CPU to get 4014GHz stable with no memory issues...the memory is (i hope) running at DDRII-800@555-15 so shouldnt be any probs there.
Have also upped the MCH Voltage and the FSB Termination voltage (sounded fun, had something to do with memory..) at 1.6V and 1.3V respectively.
CPU Voltage is set at 1.38 but detected as over 1.4V in the Hardware Monitoring..sweet.

back with more later...gonna be trying a windows install next, when sort of stable-ish.

Its looking good at 1.400V for the CPU.
Memory at DDRII-800 at 2.3V @4-4-4-12 (um, it wont be getting hot anytime soon, so why not )

Heh, didnt mention anything about the cooling

      I'm using an XP-120 and a PAPST 4412NHH @10V.
Yes, the XP-120 is for AMD CPU's, i noticed this afternoon the difference between the XP-120 and the SI-120.
Not only is one meant for Intel and the other AMD, but one is 90mm tall and the other is 63mm tall.
No bloody wonder i had such a hard time fitting it to the mobo, with that large passive intel NB Heatsink.

Anyhow, the PAPST 4412NHH is a 9-12V 5000RPM 120mm fan, aluminium housing, and 60€ each.
180CFM ~60dB, maybe in the 50's with 10V, inaudible at 9V, but also crap airflow

Yup, overclocking, and the ambient is so hot, i'm shirt-less, and sweating like a pig
                must be high 20's 28 or 29°C atm...even at 9pm

edit: Yup, outside its 28°C in the shade.

You've got to clear something up for me, are you overclocking without having Windows already installed and using memtest to determine if it's stable ?

If so, my advice would be to put everything on default, install Windows, run a few games and apps to see if it's stable and start overclocking after.

                    Admiral:
Quite probably, but i've had a few problems before where windows was corrupted by too high clocks, so this time, i'm going the other way round for a change

It only froze on the saving settings of the Windows install just a few mins ago, so i've just rebooted to see if it will finish this time, otherwise i may have to go up to 11 or 12V on the fan.

edit: i'm using an external 50W Variable PSU for the CPU fan due to the reboot problems.

Just an assumption, based on my latest two Asus boards (for AMD though), your reboots and pauses in the bios can be due to overclocking or an out of spec voltage/fan rpm (hardware monitor).

Hmm, froze again on the "Saving Settings" @ 6min to go....bugger.
I think it may be a problem interfacing with the SATA HDD, cos i dont recognise all the related settings in the BIOS, its one of my first AWARD BIOS's...

gonna set the SATA to the most stable settings, and some other stuff also probably.

                        and try again

Yup, i'm not using ANY of the onboard fan headers, but it started the reboot thing almost immediately after going out of spec.

I've deactivated any fanspeed/whatever in the BIOS as much as i can.
It doesnt shout at me for any of it, just the CPU one until i deactivated it.

is there a CTRL+F1 type thingy in award bios's like on my Gigabyte borad?
