I had to remove Vista and only reinstalled XP after I got a trojan that was detected late by NOD32. The OS was still functional but I kept hearing system alert sounds (those balloon pop-up sounds) out of the blue.

Until there's a proper firewall out for Vista (and the one built-in can't be called proper) I'm not sure if I want to reinstall it.

Does firewall really have much to do about trojans?...
Reminds me of this thread http://forums.murc.ws/showthread.php?t=58810

Not sure what happens if you already caught one, but I like to have a decision on what programs can do and mostly on outgoing rights.
The Vista firewall goes by the principle that everything can have outgoing rights unless you specifically set a rule for that program.

Here's a hint - no personal firewall has ever saved anyone from a Trojan. By the time the personal firewall says anything... you're already infected.

I have a hard time believing you got something with Vista though, unless you turned off the "are you sure you want to run <PROGRAM X>" messages...

So you've done a complete investigation with which to come to that conclusion

well, NIS, PANDA and some other software firewalls is known to totally inhibbit internet conection so they have probably temporarly saved someone from a trojan
