How many of you have tried Overclocking the new celerons

I presume you have a BX board ...

I'd suggest to grab the Cel-566 with standard cooling, i.e. about any heatsink-fan combo that is available. Grab the SlotKET!!! from ABit (socket to slot1 converter) and post back when you got the goods for further instructions.

It seems that about every Cel-566 hits 100MHz FSB at ease and hence runs @ 850MHz.

While I'm thinking about it (rare I know) whats a decent heatsink for a PIII sec2 and where can I get it from in the UK. The speed maybe getting up towards 860mhz hopefully.

If your ram can take it, I still recommend the celermine 533. I know Maggi says go for the 566, but hear me out.

Take a look at the 3dmark scores, I managed to get a whole 20 more CPU marks with only a 20MHz difference in core speed, and my high-detail framerates are higher despite having a slower video card. This is because my memory bandwidth is much better than Maggi's, a key barrier to performance with the new celerons. If your ram is CAS2 rated PC100 or better, I strongly recommend the 533.

I also heavily recommend the Thermaltake Aircooler Socket (also known as the Golden Orb), its the inexpensive cooling masterpiece behind my celermine @ 896MHz

Maggi, you did tweak your memory for the second test didnt you?

I didn't tweak the mem for the 2nd run ... it set to 7ns in my BIOS since months.

I did shut down all apps running in the background and I set my desktop to 640x480x16bpp to free up more local GFX-RAM ...

You surely got your point in recommending the 533A, all I hope is that if I increase my cooling, I will be able to get it stable @ 112MHz FSB which would put me to steady 952MHz.

We'll see how it benches then, beause the one test (ZD CPU Mark) I was able to complete @ 952, gave me another decent boost over 875 MHz.

Just to throw in my 2 cents. I recently purchased my younger brother a pre-tested 533 off e-bay. Alas, all we have are PC100 sticks, but for a brief, shining moment, I had that thing running on a 124 mhz bus (992 mhz) @ 1.8. But alas, that little trick didn't last more than 10 seconds into 3DMark before the computer realized the fast one I tried to pull on it... And has refused to boot at that speed ever since. SOO close to a near Gigahertz...

So, now that 533 is just sitting on it's laurels at a lowly 920 off a 115 mhz bus @ 1.75. Oh well...

If you want a decent SECC2 cooler www.overclockers.co.uk sell the GlobalWIn VNS04, which is what my PIII 600E (@800MHz ) currently has attached to it.

If you want something bigger, www.powercomputing.co.uk sell the Alpha P3125.

Download cpu idle and was quite impressed by the results. Cpu temp down to 25C from 35 to 40C

Well got the PIII 650 to 806mhz at 1.70v seemingly running stable. It ran Fritz6 for an hour an half without bombing out. At 865mhz with 133mhz bus it bombed out after half n hour and thats with the voltage at 1.75v. It may work at 1.8v but I think I'd better get a better heatsink for that.

A little update on my Cel-566:

Yesterday I'vew been to a friend's home and we wanted to find out whether his P2B Rev. 1.10 would also be able to run my CPU, because like in my case (P2B-S Rev. 1.02) ASUS claims his revision would also be too old to support Coppermine CPUs ...



Well ... we had it stable at 105MHz FSB resulting in a tidy bit below the 900MHz !

at 110 FSB (935 core) 3D Mark 200 bombed out in the 2nd CPU stress test, but we were still using 'only' that standard HS/fan combo from Pabst ...

Needless to say that I know will increase my cooling to get it stable @ 112/952 FSB/CPU and I'll start off by adding another fan onto the HS.

I'll keep you posted !

I have a PIII-650 FC-PPGA and I have the "old" stepping.
I put the sucker in my board "CUBX" and tried 133 off the bat and Nothing....

Heya LAMF !!!

Did you notice that I run my Cel-566 on an Asus P2B-S Rev 1.02 and yesterday I ran that same CPU on a P2B Rev 1.10 ...

I suggest to bump up the VCore to 1.8 before you get a new MoBo, because below 1.8V it did not even POST on those two MoBos !!!

the link you posted to ASUS coppermine compatibility site tells that both MoBos I used would not run Coppermines at all ...

(P2B-S had to be rev 1.04 or higher and P2B - as you posted - 1.12 or higher)

I figured it was a voltage problem. I have a good mobo, my friend has the P2B Rev 1.10. The reason I wanted to sell him th e 650 was so I could get the SL4** P3-700 and shoot for a gig.
With a good Slocket I could get it to work on his machine but he needs a stable machine for his AOL use,

I am shopping, here at work, for a 566Mhz CPU - (PPGA - Socket 370)
