Greebe - According to a security site I visited,
        https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

I have no open ports including 110 which Norton previously had a problem with.

        A discussion is on:
        http://grc.com/faq-shieldsup.htm#NAV2K

        (scan down one frame)

Do you know something that is not discussed here?

Well then it may really be fixed now (still not 100% positive tho). I have to ask you this, how much faith would you be willing to place in a company that claimed it had been fixed in a previous release and yet it was not and it was open in the first place when it should never have been?
Norton products used to be very fine, but in last few years all I've seen them produce is bloated, crash prone software, that's "neat".
Remember this product was known as AtGuard, whom Norton bought up. All they did was "enrich" it with a heavily GUI based shell and lots of bells and whistles added.

The problem was with Norton AntiVirus 2000, NOT Norton Firewall.

              Brian,
It sounds like they put you on PPPoE.
If so, the linksys router will save you a lot of headachs.
It can manage your connection it's self and you can dump the crappy Pseudo-Dialup software.
Also, it will act as your firewall.

Chuck - Once I install the router, what changes do I need to make to allow it to manage the system? (or are these details in the instructions?)

mdhome, in canada it's $39.95/month for 1024kbps down/128kbps up. That works out to, let's see, £17.93/month, or US$26.91/month, at current exchange rates. Cable costs the same, but you get as much as 3Mbps down/512kbps up. Unfortunately, my neighborhood is not wired for cable yet, so I'm stuck with DSL. Poor me

Greebe - I have to agree with you about the bloated software I've seen from Norton. I was pleasantly surprised with the Norton Firewall. It installed without a fuss and had not given me any reason, so far, to worry about my decision to load it. You don't need it, so no problem. I don't have any other option at this point, other than a software solution. I have just ordered some HW which may take it's place. I'll try and just keep the antivirus part, although if there is no conflict I may keep it all loaded. I am happy with it so far.

                      Hi agallag
                      Thanks for letting ne know.
I will be interesting to see what everyone in the office thinks about about the price and speed differentials between Canada and the UK. It seems that in the UK, BT (British Telecom) have people by the gonads and are taking their time in rolling out this product. I think this has more to do with the fact that BT, being the monopoly that it is, is trying to cream the ISDN markets etc. I dont mind that but it does have a negative effect with the uptake of new broadband services in the UK

                      regards Michael

mdhome, in Holland a high speed dsl (1 mbit to 2~8 mbit kbps downstream, depending on the company) connection will cost around 75$us a month (this includes phone)

agallag, don't forget that cable is a shared medium. A cable connection can actually prove a lot slower then your dsl if you are unlucky enough to have all your neighbours downloading iso's all day long

mdhome, here in Canada we have the phone monopoly taking on the cable monopoly in the broadband war. They have a nice advertising battle going on. The cable guys are trashing the phone guys pretty good. Agallag probably seen some of the tv commericials.

EdSki, the phone company gladly points out the potential problems with cable, and the cable providers do the same thing. However, both sides refuse to engage in a "price war", which is bad news for us. The price for either service is $39.99(Cnd.)+ a fat tax and you either have to be a cableTV subscriber or use the phone company's long distance plan to get these "discount" rates.

German Telekom wants 40$ for a 768/128 ADSL connection, pretty cheap i think.
