Ok so I should not have said free when what I really meant was at no additional expense semantics. The bottom line as far as I'm concerned is I try to use what isalready in place and then if it doesn't work go to additional means. I'm kind of lazy like that. The cheapest solution would probably to use linux on the nat box but win2k is already in place so .......

      Right:

I have enabled sharing on the dial up (host)
I have enabled 'on demand dialing' (host)

on the client i have changed the static IP for the NIC to 'obtain automatically'

I need to enable DHCP and disable DNS dont i?

      I don't have a gateway.

How can ZoneAlarm be configured to accept the client if its IP is dynamic?

(new to this but eager to learn!)

but you do have a gateway

the pc with the internet connection is your gateway.

Fill in the IP used by this gateway in the other pc's tcp/ip properties page

On the machine with the internet connection enable ICS on the connection (it is on the properties tab at the extreme right). Enable on demand dialling. This will set up this machine as a DHCP server with IP address 192.168.0.1 and also warn you about losing connectivity with the other machines on the network, ignore. On the other machine in the properties of the local area network connection, double click on Internet Protocol to get its properties. Chose automatically obtain ip address. That should do it. You may have to specify a DNS but shouldn't have to

when i set up the network i gave the host an ip of 192.168.0.1 and the client an ip of 192.168.0.2. why do i now need to change the clients ip to dynamic?

You must have unique addresses for all systems on a network otherwise the duplicates force one another to kill net connectivity....generally one will bow out on the network but i have seen both PCs bow out....hope this helps you out...

I have established from Dilitante that i need to:

upgrade the host to a PDC and then add the only) two users to a list.

I feel like a pleb at the mo.

                  Can anyone help me out?

This is really easy to set up:

The first PC will act as a DCHP Server, and the 2nd PC will get its ip from the first. No need to set up gateway, DNS Servers or anything else. In IE, don't tell it to do anything. IT will work! I used it for quite a while a few months ago. The only problem is getting it to install properly, but as with all win9x networking, any probs - remove everything network related, and re-install.

So that's what the internet looks like. LOL

Other people always ask me what the internet is, now I have a picture to show them.

My Dial up needs auto assign IP

You want me to remove my NIC (not physically) and reinstall ICS?

                          How did i install it?

                          Am i being stupid? (probably!)
