Here we have three or four trusted names in the MURC Forums going at it like secondary school boys in the lunch line...grow up all of you!
I'm glad all of you were able to help (Ahem)Paddy, though. I'm sure it could have been done with more decorum and a LOT less swearing, but that's just me. No particular flame here, but if everyone were to reread all of the posts, it does seem a little silly, and the heat level in here is absolutely unfounded for this subject.
That said, I have something to say on this subject; Something for those trying to use Win2K's ICS:
If for some strange reason you have upgraded your installation of Win98SE to Windows 2000, you may find that DUN and ICS do not work properly. Alas, the solution seems to be to reinstall Windows 2000 either fresh, or into a different directory altogether.
Strange, but I've seen and experienced this problem several times (once with my machine, and other times on other forums - notably 2cpu.com), so I don't think this is an isolated occurance.
Hope this helps!
Hey, Donny! We got us a German who wants to die for his country... Oblige him. - Lt. Aldo Raine
I did a fresh install of 2K on both machines...
I'm just a bit slow and a bit of a lemon!
I think there was a lot of PUI (posting under the influence) last night! - I know I was....
But its all sorted now.
However, Although DHCP assigns an IP to the client (and its always 192.168.0.2, ZonAlarm doesn't like it. I have Added the IP address in the security TAB - in order to get networking working. Any ideas?

1)netbeui must be listed for both nics.
2) allow file sharing on the client pc.
3) share a disk or printer on the client.
4) look in network neighborhood of the server pc for the shared item in client pc.
(If it's visible, you're communicating)
5)setup and verify working internet access on the server. (log-off if you like)
6) on win98se, you would run ics wizard through control panel/add remove/windows setup/internet... (on w2k this step might be different)
you should now be surfing
p.s. your ip settings 192.168.0.1, and 2 are what ics would use. The client pc should be set to automatically obtain addr, if it's not.

- Netbuei is a completely different and obsolute protocol... it has nothing to do with ICS
- and about the other points: ICS HAS NOTHING TO DO with the netbios service, which is used by MS networks for sharing printers and files.
In the end it was SteveC whose technical expertise, and most of all patience helped me through!
Thanks again, but its all sorted now!
My only complaint is Zone Alarm - I cant configure it to work... (and yes i have enabled the IP of the client becaues i can map to the host)

I am running a v.90 modem & both machines are using win2k.
If i use DU meter (ta Greebe) my maximum download rate is greater than 56kbs (only if i am simultaneously downloading on both machines). How is this possible?
I have to disable ZA to use the ICS though...
Anyone know of an alternative (preferably free )

the problem with stuff like black Ice and Lockdown is that they are 'oversensitive'.
Sometimes it detects a trojan attack, when someone is doing a portscan on you, and many other odd things...
You can configure a firewall with Win2k itself, but don't ask me to give full details, because I use a Linux firewall.. A Win2k MCSE should know how to configure a proper firewall in Win2k I think...
And there are alternatives... I've heard Conseal works quite well..

One of the possible explanations (what i think is most likely):
well... depends on what DU meter is mesuring...
if you have set it to "monitor all network interfaces" in the properties, it will measure the data it receives from you backend pc too..
And even when you're copying something from the main pc to a backend pc, it will send data from the back-end pc to the main pc: It has to 'tell' the main pc that it got a packet successfully, and wants to receive the next data-packet. This creates a small data-stream too...
dzeus, The way I described the setup of ICS was the only way I got it to work on 4 different pc setups.
As far as your advice:
...the pc with the internet connection is your gateway.
Fill in the IP used by this gateway in the other pc's tcp/ip properties page...
and again this advice:
...For DNS, enter exactly the same settings as on your main pc (i.e. the DNS settings used by you internet provider). These settings should be _exactly_ the same....
When using ICS the client's tcp/ip properties page show gateway is left blank and dns is disabled on the client.
