I do have sensitive eyes, I will admit that. But the thing is that if I can see that it's visually worse than even my Radeon, then it's not as good as what I expect for 400 bucks. The thing is, I like to have my refresh rates set at least to 100Hz (prefered minimum), the bare minimum being 85Hz....Superfly, set your refresh rate to 100 Hz if your monitor can handle it, you should see what I am talking about if the first card wasn't just defective. I will be puting the bench system back together later on this week, right now I am in the middle of moving...yay

At what resolution color depth do you want to try it???.

The most i can go at 100hz refresh is 1280*960,anything above that i can only set it at 85hz(1600*1200 is the max supported resolution).

In any case i tried it(1280*960 32 bit 100hz)and still don't get the problem you mentioned(shadowing of text).

Did you try to increase the mouse refresh rate to see if that solves the screen shaking problem(using the scroll bar)???.

      Damn...i need a 21 inch monitor... .

No, I didn't mess with my mouse refresh rate, I run win2k and it defaults to the highest sampling on the PS2 port AFAIK.

Oh, and it didn't matter what resolution I ran, 100Hz and above made the text shadow. When you use small fonts like I do, it makes them look blury, but if you use larger fonts, you have to look close, but it's there.

Superfly: It might well be that you just can't see the difference because your monitor is a little blurry anyway and you've gotten used to it. I myself would say I wouldn't see the difference because of my monitor either, and I would consider it kinda high end at the time when I bought it (4 years ago spent $750 on a 17"). Or your eyes might just be not as sensitive as Rags' .

Superfly: I've heard many a good thing about the G400 (The Sony one, that is, the Matrox one too, actually ), and in fact I'm planning tu buy it's successor, the G420, BUT I've also heard of issues with Sony QC and that many G400 aren't as sharp as they should be - I don't know if you can tell the difference if your monitor is just slightly blurry, but maybe you have such a model. Or your eyes aren't as sensitive as Rags'

              Just guessing here

I'm getting very clear and sharp text, even when viewing it at 1600*1200 with the monitor less than a foot from my eyes.

I'm not saying that rags is wrong or anything, just that in my case,i'm not seeying any visual artifacts at all.

The only other reason i can think of that may make a difference is that i'm using a 650W power supply(enermax)and that both the computer and monitor are connected to a 1000W apc smart ups, which filters any RF noise that may be present and keeps the voltage at a steady 120V for both the system and monitor.

Btw rags,i think that the ps2 refresh rate is set at 60 hz dy default in win2k,which is too low to avoid seeing the mouse pointer flicker if you move it fast, set it 200 and the mouse pointer moves as smooth as that on a mac.

It even affects the smoothness in games as well, especially for FPS ones(for the better)

                            Hi there again Matrox Lovers,
First of all: THANKS y'all for the big respons on my topic!
I've been using M cards for many years now, starting with the first Millenium. For obvious reasons, 2D quality. The G400 I'm currently using is clearly outdated for 3D (gaming).
Since the first rumours about the G800 I,ve been waiting and waiting...But I'm getting tired of the whole thing with Matrox and their super slow product refresh cycle (on the other hand Nvidia is going a bit too fast for my taste).
I'm now waiting for reviews of the Elsa Gladiac 920 GF3. According to the Elsa tradition it should have the best 2D of all the GF3 boards out there. The card itself sould be hitting the shelfs pretty soon.

I see dark clouds on the horizon for Matrox...unless they come up with a ultra fast 3D monster very soon...

                            Greetings,
                            Wilco.

Ouch Matt, you've tried all 6 monitors on that card? Must've broken your back then, or do you have a slide-bar with the monitors on installed?

                              Jord.
