Yeah, I'm missing the 5400-is-automatically-faster-than-7200 bit as well. It seems like a better access time and higher sustained throughput would beat out the spin-up time.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

az - this PC is in the boot of my car, and although only does the time at the moment (it runs a 20x4 LCD screen), it will as part of my next year's university project, do all sorts of info gathering (temp sensors, brakelight failure sensors ets) and will also me an MP3 player.
(I've actually already done the MP3 playback bit, but just need to make an human interface for it).
So, as you can see, at the moment, I'm looking at around 30 seconds to just get a clock in my car when I start the engine.
I'm also looking into using suspend to disk (hibernation) in winme.

They usualy have a "how to optimize xxxx" section(P4 this year)!
And there they usualy talk about how to speed up boot times (disableing USB, unsused com ports etc.) and also they state that a 5400 drive decreases boot times (less time to spinn up etc.)! Ofcourse a fast 7200 model will always bé faster than a old Quantum bigfot becouse of faster seektimes and higher transfer rates etc.
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

Not meaning to take away from Technoid's day in the Sun but ... I already had the Max Speed bookmark. Probably added it after Brian the Terrible (DV) posted it last winter or more likely when Rik posted it in January. Guess I should spend some time and see what this site has to offer.

Well - the PC won't be doing anything acutally important - it's more of an add-on to the car. Have you ever seen inside the more modern Vauxhall (Opel) cars? Esp. the higher-end models in each range have a screen in them which tells them all sorts of info about possible problems.
The PC's main use will be for MP3 playback.
