If what you have is a true winmodem you're going to be bogged down as it'll need cpu cycles. Since you're playing a game online this is then forced to share the cpu with UT and slow you down that much more. For browsing it looks to be a winner, but if it is a winmodem, you will always have this problem. Get a hardware based (non Win)modem instead.

        Thanks for the links Mike

Matt, I might be concerned about the connection speed, but how do I check my true online speed then?
KvH, if only I could, I would
        Wouldn't help me though.

        Jord.

Btw, before the forums go down, anyone out there with experience on a USB modem?

          Jorden,
To find you're true DTC* connect speed
one of you're "S" registers needs to be
          set to a certain value.
It will even show up in windows if you
add the command to the modem's init string.
I am at work now, so I don't have my
manual for my old ZOOM 28.8 modem. But,
that sucker is an inch thick and has
          everything you need.
If no one else answers before this evening
I will post the command to use.
(it may be "ATS11=96") (or 97)
          chuck

PS Try adding ATZ to the modems init string.

            Thanks Chuck.
I was trying to put extra worths to the S registers already, but in WinME I don't have a terminal program (yet) to insert them.
            Win2k doesn't have it either, I checked.
So I have to look for a terminal program which gives me the option. My old modem had such a program included, I'll try if that one works

              Jorden,
There should be an init string setting for the modem somewhere in it's properties, shouldn't there be?
I can't use ME because the Oracle database client software won't install on it so, I'm not familiar with the modem set up.

Jorden, go into the properties page for your modem in control panel, there should be an Advanced tab with a box labeled Extra Initialization Commands, stick them in there. This is where it is under Win2k, ME will probably be different.

I can only send an init string before I use the modem. I've just been on tucows to look for a modem program to play around with the registers, but I gave up. No matter what search option I tell it, it gives me 45,000 options, mostly doubles

I need a terminal program without using the modem itself. I only want to read the registers and put new numbers in them. Anyone out there who knows of such a free-/shareware program?

Isn't Hyperterminal included with all versions of windows?
I know it is in Win2k.
                    You can use it.

So people told me before. I wish to know how then. If I start up hyperterminal it asks me for a name of this connection.
If I give it, it will ask for a telephone number to call...

If I refuse to give a name or number, I come to a screen in which I can't type anything. Since when do I need to make a connection with the modem to reprogram it to other values? That's just plain BS

                      Jord.

Jord, that's what makes hyperterminal so wonderful, it'll work with just about everything! You just need to tell it what.

                          Jorden,
I know it's frustrating. But, there is a way
to use HT for what you need.
I just wish I could remember how
Try entering a bogus phone number.

Instead of selecting the modem on the Connect Using box you have to select COM2 or Direct connect to COM2, (replace COM2 with the port the modem is using). Set an appropriate baud rate, 19200 should be good, and you should be able to access the modems settings. If it's working type ATH0 should get a response OK.

It looks like he is concerned soley with connect speed, not true speed.
