That's weird - I have a friend who has a m577 mainboard and has been happily running 4.51 drivers for ages. The other day he screwed his PC, I re-installed the lot, and put on PD 5.25. His PC would then not shut down.
Everyone - this is not the normal hang at the 'please wait' screen, or rebooting instead of shutting down. What it is, is, just after the desktop is lost, and just before the 'please wait' graphic is shown, the desktop goes black, and you are left with a mouse pointer. The PC is then hung and required a hard reset. The big problem with this, is, the registrey gets screwed and goes back the one previous every time you boot.
danswan - try 4.51 drivers and see if that works. If it does, I reckon we have the same problem here. I haven't been able to fix it though.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Thanks Steve, now i know I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.I've tried installing all the matrox drivers with no luck and disabling fast shutdown. Do I need to reinstall win98? Or is there a work around? Maybe a problem with the win98, via busmasering drivers? I don't know its very frustrating.I hope someone or matrox has a answer soon

        Hey guys,

I have the exact same problem. Any drivers I use above 4.51 crash my system during shutdown. Black screen with a frozen mouse pointer. I'm going to try to disable fast shutdown as suggested. I'll keep you posted.

Hey Guys! I had the same problem (M577, G400DH32,98SE), and posted about it a couple of weeks ago.
I solved it by doing a fresh install of 98SE, and installing PD5.21 BEFORE sound drivers (PCI128) etc. I've messed around lots with the mobo drivers etc since but they had no effect.

          Hope this helps

          Tony.

I agree with the anti-microsoft camp, it's nothing to do with your G400 or hardware, it's a microsoft thing... I tried installing the shutdown suppliment, and it had no effect... bloody Microsoft
So if my product doesn't work on some OS, it's not my fault but the OS's? It isn't Matrox's fault that their product which is advertised as Windows compatible is not compatible with Windows in some way?

That really makes no sense. While the OS is Microsoft's product how can someone tell when it's working like it shouldn't? Bugs or features..?
But if someone advertises product as Windows compatible, it should be that despite the possible design flaws the OS may have.

Does MS advertise Windows as G400 compatible?

              Hi Buuri,

It's more like "Is Winwhatever, Windows compatible ?"

              Pertti

btw. did you get the new monitor already ?

I didn't get the tube yet, but I'm going with your suggestion.

Ok, here's a new twist regarding Windows 98 SE shutdown problems with the G400 32 meg Dual (OEM).

I have a Cel366 PPGA that I'm trying to overclock to 550. It runs fairly stably with the case open and some thermal grease at 2.1v. However, when I get the system hangs when during shutdown at the "waiting for Win 98 to shutdown" screen. This problem does not occur when I reset back to 366.

Has anyone had this problem? Besides the obvious solution of running at a slower speed, does anyone have any ideas?

                  Thanks.

It's a funny thing, but suffered the same problem.Drove me nuts, blamed new hard drive, blamed g200,blamed microsoft, blamed the next door neighbor.I use pc-cillin anti virus program, when I went to reinstall it,I read the read me file.It said something along the lines, when pc-cillin detects Via chipset,a line is added to config.sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS This statement may cause shut down or start up problems.Rem said statement.
So you see such problems may arise from other sources.Possibly check your autoexec.bat or config sys files to see any commands that don't look kosher, check the read me files on applications, get the patch from microsoft and if all that fails, blame matrox, microsoft and ESPECIALLY your next door neighbor

                      Thanks Alfie.

I thought someone was sneaking into my place and messing with my computer ! I just thought it was Murphy instead of the neighbours. I'm going to have to give them a good beating.

Anyway, jokes aside, I did uninstall Norton Antivirus thinking it was related to the shutdown problems. It seems weird, however, that such problems don't occur at 366 versus 550. In any event, I'll check the config and autoexec to see if I can find any residual nastiness.

                      Thanks for the info.

P.S. Ya, who reads Readme files anyway? They slow me down on my way to instant gratification.

I disabled fast shutdown and that seemed to fix the problem. BTW I'm running PD 5.25 and Norton Antivirus 4.04
