Ok, so far I haven't seen anyone report having problems with a board made in Ireland. So, it seems to me that it may be likely there was some sort of quality control problem with some percentage of the original batch of boards built in Canada. At least, based on this small sample. How about it? Anyone out there having the AGP2X lockup problem have a board made in Ireland?

Hmm..my board is a canadian board and I get lockups with my BE6 unless it is in AGP 1x with the reghack.

I wonder if we can get a replacement board if it is because of a defect in the canadian boards?

        My system:
        Abit BE6
        G400 Max
        Celeron 366

I usually run my system at 550, but I set it up at 366 and reinstalled win98se with only my g400 in the system and I still got the lockups within minutes of windows booting up. There definately is something wrong between the abit boards and the g400, but running at AGP 1X makes it at least stable.

The serial number for my board is:
        ABY78740 105

I bought my board from the Matrox online store around 9/9/99 and received it the following week, approx 9/16/99

          Hi guys,

Judging from this thread, what I see so far is that all the people that have no problems with 2x are using G4x boards manufactured both from Ireland and Canada.

People who have 2x problems are using G4x boards manufactured in Canada and possibly have 2 wires for our fan on the bad ones.

Scytale and others - Do your fans also have 2 wires?

          What are your serial #'s?

If possible, when did you guys buy these cards?

BC - Ship your card to the address that our on line store gave you but put it to my attention - "Haig Dedeyan MGI Technical Support"

I'll talk to the On line people tomorrow.

          Haig

            Haig,
            Here is the extra info I can provide;

Canadian model with lockups in AGX 2x mode on a ABIT BE6 board. Worked fine once I used the AGP 1x reg hack. I originally ordered the board on 9/12/99 and recieved it on 9/15/99. The serial number was ABY78887 (There was another number on the board marked as serial number. It was - 0458). The fan on the canadian board had 2 wires and had metal blades. The new board that I had cross shipped was from Ireland and had a 3 wire plastic fan. I already shipped the canadian board back on 9/24/99 so I could get my refund. Sorry. If you contact me directly I'll supply you with the RMA info. Hope this helps!

I had to force AGP 1x on my system:
              Abit BH6 with LN bios
G400 Max, Assembled in Ireland, 2 wires on fan
              SB Live Value
              nothing in PCI slot 1

Crashes were occuring in Halflife and Heavy Gear II

                  HAIG,

                  G400 Max Ireland Board
and 2x lock ups here on Abit Bx6r2.

I have a RMA number for refund. I held back returning hoping this problem would be resolved by a driver fix. Now it seems to be a hardware flaw, I would like to arrange to cross ship it for a good one if you could pull one out.
                  Please let me know.

                  My email is jack.mail@home.com

Thanks, the online support here is 1st rate.

Hi guys. Haig, the fan on my Canadian MAX has two wires. S/N ABY68499 104, MFG P/N 79075010671.
On the board there's also a small white sticker stating 6025910 and S/N 0087.

I ordered the card on June 6th, and received shipment notification on July 22nd.

                      Haig,
I have a Canadian MAX w/ 2 wire fan and an Abit BH6. I did a lot of testing yesterday and could not produce a lockup. However, I am stuck @ 1024x768 while my monitor is in the shop. Assuming the techdemo uses AGP transfers at that res with everything else turned all the way up, then I can't reproduce the problem. I get stable AGP 2X in D3D and OGL.
I did a lot of tinkering with allowing and dis-allowing caching & shadowing the MB & MAX bioses, memory timings etc. Also of note may be that my case has a 300W power supply.
Is the problem only related to P2 & P3s, not celerons?
                      chuck

ps +%160? Very confident! Send me a tub of liquid N2 and I will test it

I have a 32MB G400 D/H assembled in Ireland. I just got it on Sept 23rd and spent the entire friggin weekend trying to make D3D and OGL stuff work without freezing, 2D is fine. I have tryed EVERY solution that can be found here (Matrox Users) and on DejaNews. My specs are as follows:

                        ABIT BH6
                        Pentium III 450
                        128 MB RAM
                        G400 in AGP slot
                        Pioneer 6x DVD
                        Win98 SE

Ripped out ALL other hardware to see if it would work, re-installed Win 98SE (Twice!)

Yes I updated both the Motherboard and G400 BIOS's.

Yes I turned of all Video cacheing in the MOBO Bios settings.

Yes I tried both shipping drivers and the latest update from Matrox.

                        I tried DirectX 6.1 and 7

I tried both 1/1 and 2/3 AGP in BIOS.

I tried the 1X AGP hack.

I tried with busmastering ON/OFF Texture caching ON/OFF.

And many more. I tried EVERY solution you can read about on this group and DEJA!

This thing freezes as soon as anything breathes 3D on it. I will contact tech support tomorrow with my S/N and symptoms, I suspect that I will be returing it to the dealer or Matrox for replacement.

I really hope that the G400 is not the SPARQ of the Video Card market. I had 4 SPARQ's and the last one conked out after they went under.

                        MATROX?

I'm crossing my fingers that this is just an obscene driver problem and that the hardware is fine. Should I wait and try the new drivers being released on Oct. 8th ?

I have a ABIT BE6 motherboard and my G400 is stuck in AGP 1 X mode, that is what Sisoft sandra reports. How can I change settings to try agp 2 x mode ?

                          Thank you

Here is an excerpt from an article on Deja. Don't mess with this if you don't know how, there are some hacks you can get instead from this site htttp://www.murc.ws/Utils/PD5RegHacks.zip

                            Under: hkey_local machine\system\current control
set\services\class\display\0003\settings (the 0003 may be different) you'll have a few subkeys. Under the CPU one, you'll have an AGPFallBAck setting. Add a AGPflags and the settings are as follows:
-2 - Up to 4x (No AGP Test)
-1 - Up to 2x (No AGP Test)
0 - Up to 1x (No AGP Test)
                            1 - Highest if test
2 - Highest if test succeed (Force AGPFallback = 1)

Thank you Brad, now I can try if AGP 2X works on my Abit BE, because many people are reporting lock ups perhaps I am lucky !

                              Thanks Dennis

according to pcilist, my canadian MAX is running in AGP2X. no crashes/lockups. BTW, there are 3 pins on the fan connecter. I ordered my MAX sometime in early July and got it in late August.
